There appears to be some concerns about the 5700XT and the current state of its driver, because of the architecture change (older Polaris vs newer Navi)... but I just ordered a 5700XT with a Razer Core X Chroma enclosure. A Radeon 580 or Vega 64 are probably safer choices, but kinda old tech imo.  Apple currently does not support Nvidia cards.

Now that the W5700X is available for the Mac Pro, I'm betting the driver is much improved for the 5700XT.

Update:  I now feel I've thoroughly tested the Razer Core X Chroma + 5700XT eGPU setup...and can report  zero issues.  In fact, quite stellar performance.  Plus it has "solved" the massive heat / fans issues with the 16" MBP.

Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX580 8GB DDR5 (No other brand or name) is approved by Apple for Metal use.

You just need an enclosure to put it in.

And as long as you don't do video, 3d or games, you don't need such top-notch resources. Picture editing is not *that* demanding
