Make the ZOOM work like it should!

I have found that while pressing the Alt key and using the zoom slider (top right) that I can make my image zoom in increments of 1%.
Question...how do I make it stay at the setting I have chosen (eg 45%) without it springing back to one of the default zoom percentages when I release the mouse button?

If its not possible then why display at that setting?

  Neat. I didn't know that. I've wishing for this for a while.

  Yes entering zoom would be great!
