Suibscriptions

I'm not aware of any changes.
1 user, 3 activations on the buying/upgrading option, and 1 user, 2 activations on the subscription option.
That's what it was, and it still is.

Hans the (new?) subscription option is the point when they have downgraded the activations. I expect C1 will eventually be subscription only so we have lost an activation...speak now !

Geoff, I'm just another user, and I'm not going to make assumptions about the future. But subscription isn't new anymore. Nor is the discussion about the two models here in the forum. Pricing and seats are part of that discussion.

I personally do prefer the buying/upgrading model. For personal reasons, not because I need a 3rd activation.

Hans, the point I am trying to make is that C1 didn't originally have 3 activations, just 2.

A small group of individual photographers explained the working practice of some studio / location photographers, working in more than one location / city / country needed 3.

Phase One listened to this user feedback and allowed 3 activations. They have now reversed that decision for the new model.
It wouldn't even be such an issue if each additional activation was costed....it's not . It's 2 or 5.

There is a choice now, as you say, but Photoshop went subscription only very quickly.

    Kind Regards Geoff

As I understand things if you go for C1 Pro, non-subscription you have the possibility to activate on three machines if you have them and wish to do so.

If you buy C1 Pro for Sony you get 2 activations allowed since it has a lower price to start with.

I have no idea about subscriptions and I have given up speculating about future details.

Future generalities are a different matter. I thing the subscription model is a direction that many companies think they would like to go but I suspec that only the largest companies or a few who are somewhat dominant in their marketplace(s) might get away with.

On the other hand the younger generations seem content to rent their lives rather than own them so who knows what the next generation of management might be tempted to do?

I don't see show it can affect a current decision about purchase. We are talking software - a fashion market in many ways and there will be far more factors around us that will influence future decisions then whether you obtain software on a "purchased" or "rental" model basis (assuming that there is still a choice from ANY software vendor in a few years from now.)

I've been a subscriber since Capture One 9. It has been 2 activations since at least then.

I don't think its as simple as that, people being content to rent vs own. In Adobe's case it is easier to swallow the cost of $10, $20, $30, or whatever per month plan one might be on than it is to pay outright $300, $700, $2000+, or whatever combination of Adobe software one might need.

Photoshop alone was $700 to buy outright. My adobe subscription ends up being $720 every two years and that includes the entire suite + Lightroom + cloud storage/galleries + some other stuff I haven't paid attention to. It seems I'm getting more for my money than I could have before the subscription model. As for Capture One it seems the price of subscription vs owning ends up balancing out after a couple/few years so if one is a frequent user of the software and plans to keep it up to date, what really is the difference between renting and owning?

I think this has shifted from the original point.

It isn't about Purchase v Subscription.

It is why the Subscription model ( I think preferable) has only 2 activations, whereas the Perpetual (buy) has 3.

Same users same product why different needs ?

Is the glass half empty, or half full?

I'm a subscriber, if I needed 3 activations I'd be happy to know that I could buy the program and get an extra seat instead of moving up to the 5 seats license, which is substantially more expensive.

It's not about needs, in my opinion.

Just as mobile phone contracts are not about whether you can actually make 2000 minutes of calls in a month whilst sending 10,000 SMS messages and using 5GB of data.

It's was, in my opinion, simply a way to provide a little differentiation for the purchased Pro product for whatever purpose Phase had in mind.

From my POV it's nice to know I can have 3 activations .... if I ever find myself with 3 computers capable of running the software. Only one of mine is 64bit Windows at this time.
