Nikons and Slow Tethering
Hi All,
I'm really at my wits end.
Running Capture One 12.1, mainly on a 2018 MBP 6-core i7 with the 560X and 16GB RAM. Mojave.
My Nikon's tether so slowly. I routinely shoot lifestyle/people on a D850 and the computer is always 20-40 frames behind and it takes forever for it to pipe in, let alone render previews.
I use iStat to max out my fans.
The computer has no other programs on it aside from Photoshop, Bridge, and Chronosync.
I turned off transparency, and animations in MacOS.
I'll sometimes run the computer on a cart with a 4k monitor.
I noticed if I turn off Hardware display processing in C1 it runs *slightly* faster.
It's excruciating how much slower the transfer is on the D850 vs my old 5DS, and on warmer days (85+) it's especially bad.
Thanks for all the help!
Jon

I tether a D850 to my mid 2014 MacBook Pro once or twice a week. The images load in 2-5 seconds which would suggest the issue is not with the camera. 0 -
I would say 5 seconds is slow. When you’re motor driving into the computer, 6 frames would 30 seconds. 0 -
It would be slow if they all took 5 seconds to load. What I mean to say is that when I shoot rapidly for an extended period of time, the image loading does slow down to maybe 5 seconds to catch up. I'm always shooting with lights and their cycle time can limit my shooting speed so my idea of rapidly may be completely different than yours. 20-40 frames behind? No, that's not my experience with an older MacBook. 0 -
They should load in under 3-5 seconds from shot to ready in the viewer on that machine.
2 things from the top of my mind:
- thermal issues (dust and so on, especially a risk if people are smoking around the computer, as the dust then sticks to the surfaces more). Have the computer cleaned inside.
- the cable is compromised, causing a massive amount of retransmits.
I think the first option is the most plausible cause.0 -
Hi all, good morning:
I have the same problems running MBP 16" i9 8Core 64gb Ram. When I shot with Nikon D850 the tether thing becomes slow, really slow. I am digital tech and normally shoot with differents photographers each day. Sometimes they shot really fast and I have two problems: They pictures come in very slow ( I am using Startech superspeed/super expensive cables) and because this, the photographers fill the camera buffer, so they can´t keep shooting. And....of course, they complaint because this. I am completely sure it is not because the computer, can't be faster and powerful....the cables are the best in the market ( I have tried with 5 meters, 10 meters and, just in case, 2 meters: Same thing). I have tried lowering the size of the preview, doing nothing. Last thing I've tried is to connect camera to a OWC powered thunderbolt 3 dock....nothing change.
And no, this computer is not getting that warm than the previous one. It happens even in the very beginning of the session.
I can't understand how it can be that slow using a super Laptop with "only the apps I need to Shoot installed". I have tried with other cameras, being a bit faster, but nothing impressive. May be Capture One Thecnical Department have to say/do something for helping us.
The best....Javier0
