Capture One Pro 6 virtually Unusable
I cannot believe how completely unstable this program has become through the years. I am currently editing a job shot with a D800 body and the software stalls for like 30 seconds or so! On simple tasks!
The job has around 2800 images in it. Yeah thats a lot. I know. But it shouldn't hinder performance!
I am using the latest and greatest version of OSX and 16 GBs of RAM on an New Imac!. I have tried the open GL on and off. Makes no difference! Even after a clean install!!!!
My time in front of the computer editing with this software is excruciating for big jobs.
So frustrating!!!!

Have you raised a support case? 0 -

I am a dedicated Mac user but Using the latest and greatest OS (10.7) might not be correct. I would say 10.6.8 is the greatest still. No issues at all on many machines w/10.6.8
Its highly likely that something is wrong with your setup or workflow.0 -
There is absolutely nothing wrong with my workflow. I have been using this program for years now. With everything from Dslrs to medium format backs. And we actually have the program running on 10.6.8 Mac Pro machines as well with more than enough RAM. I practically live in this program and an a power user. 0 -
Rob, Maybe you can try what worked for me. I opened one of my sessions from a backup on a FW drive. After verifying that it worked fine with all the tools etc I quit Capture One. I then opened up sessions on my main drives and everything was back to normal. Not sure what happened but I believe there as some preferences or other setting that got reset.
When it was slow for me I could not find any real activity in the Activity Monitor or the system process list. At times Capture One would jump to 100% cpu, but on a 12 core machine that should be nothing. Not sure how to tell what it is doing except doing a trace. Which I will do if the problem returns. I should have done that but didn't think of it at the time.0 -
I will try that in the future.
Thanks0 -
I totally agree with Rob... my cpu usage on Capture One jumps up to 700% when doing simple tasks as scrolling images! Completely unstable, jerky, constantly freezing, takes minutes to open sessions and render thumbnails. Embarrassing and a joke to have clients around. Unfortunately I don't have a choice as I shoot with a Phase One back. I'm beyond fed up. I have an 8 core MacPro Tower with 16GB of ram and 2TB of FREE space. Open CL is always off. When C1Pro does work, it's incredible, but anything anyone says on these forums as a solution is either untrue, unreliable, or pure voodoo. Try this, try that, maybe this, maybe that. Crossing your fingers while rebooting would make more sense. OS10.5, 10.6, 10.7, whatever... this is supposed to be a PRO program not a fun toy for hobbyists to play with. It's the tool I rely on to make my living, and it fails me. Not my computer, Not my components, Not my OS, Not my education, etc. If I were a delivery driver and C1Pro was the truck, it would be stalling at every traffic light and not be able to go up hills, while angry and frustrated customers are waiting for their deliveries. (but at least it would be one of those really nice looking, fancy european trucks with large impressive emblems and grilles worth a lot of money, just a lemon for an engine). There is a fundamental problem with this program, period. I started using Capture One in 2002 with an H10 back and loved it up until the complete platform change trying to be everything to everyone, instead of a keeping it a hardcore pro tool to render the best raw images possible like it used to be. Now I await the reply to open another support case to see what's wrong with me or my system... 0 -
I just wanted to back up the last post. I love C1 for what it does, but it is freaking unstable.
My answer from support was to do a clean reinstall. That helped for a short time (hours) then the crashing (emtpy crash report) started all over (including max cpu and all the other nice stuff anybody can read in the forums).
The second answer of support was, just to do a clean reinstall again and again and again...seriously?
There are definitely serious stability issues. There is a HUGE problem. That is a fact, at least for some users, including me.
I would really love to see improvement there in upcoming versions, as there really are more than enough "features" in the software already.
PhaseOne? Any comment?0 -
2800 images in a single folder is going to cause problems. Is it possible to split the folder, even arbitrarily, into 200 image folders and then add the folders as favourites into the session and then you can view all images from there. Sounds more complicated than it is. 0 -
I really wonder what's the source to the problems you guys are complaining about.
I had my bit of problems with COP, all OpenCL related, but once turned off it works really nicely.
I always shoot tethered (in studio and almost always on location) and in a typical shoot I shoot anywhere between 800-1500 images sometimes shooting as much as 2200-2800 images a day. I had yet to have COP get stuck on me. I don't mean to be smartass but that's just my experience. As I'm writing this I Just finished a shoot in which I shot about 1500 images tethered and COP performed as always flawlessly. I never split images between folders.
I really wonder what might be the source to your problems because obviously the program performs nicely for some people like myself.

I have experienced everything everyone has mentioned in this discussion. I started with CaptureOne 3 in 2006ish.
5 & 6 are great one week and then buggy and unstable the next. I'll have a good run with no issues and then poof, everything gets whacky.
I second the call for return to the rock solid high-end tool that the old CaptureOne was.0 -

Another take would be to look at the root cause of your problems. It seems to me that what you describe is not generic to CO6 but specific for your setup (can still be a CO6 issues, but one that plays a role in your specific setup).
CO3 on the other hand, now still in good memory of some of us partly due to its simplicity, did not had that glory in its own days, to the contrary. Recollection is always colored but rock-solid was not what I remember as CO3's reputation. I believe CO3 would not be able to serve the community of users CO6 has today.
You are invited to discuss issues you have here. And there is always room for improvement, for any program.0
