DNG export
Forgive me if this is a naive question. I am very new at this.
I have used Lightroom since its introduction for raw conversion and for file sorting. I recently loaded Capture One 4 and found that I love the way it converts the NEF files from my Nikon D3; especially skin tones. I am running a MacBook Pro and Leopard. My Lightroom and Photoshop are the most updated versions.
When I convert in Lightroom and export as a DNG file, the file carries all of the adjustments I performed during the conversion. When I process in CO4 and save in DNG format, the file appears to be a direct conversion with none of the adjustments that I did included in the file. I don't want to save to TIFF because I freaquently want to continue tweaking in Photoshop CS-3 and I believe the DNG is much better for that. Am I missing something? It seems that CO4 becomes a waste of time if I want to save in DNG.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark, your observation is correct. CO4 does not include or apply an adjustment made when output to DNG. I have not asked for it yet, but I consider this as something to be fixed in a future update. 0 -
Hello
I suggest this web site
http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/index.html
What you will see is that there is two flavors of DNG.
First one is RAW DNG, it is basically a RAW file converted in to the DNG format.
Then there is linear DNG which is a de-mosaic'd file. In other words no longer a RAW file and in this case can include your changes. We do not really regard this as a RAW file anymore and do not support this format, at least not yet.
In this case you can process to TIFF instead.
There is quite a lot of confusion between the two formats. There is some clear advantages with the linear DNG and possibilities that is quite exciting.
Here is a good site

Hi Ulf,
Is it possible to embed Capture One settings as XMP, and add a thumbnail and full size JPEG preview based on those settings?

It is not possible to export settings as XMP, however the settings file is XML based.
Preview is embedded in to process file automatically.0 -
Hi Ulf,
Thanks for the information.
I thought DNG allowed vendors like Phase One to embed a thumbnail and JPEG preview based on your RAW converter. IOW the embedded preview would be the same as a medium quality JPEG processed in Capture One 4. iView, Expression Media, etc, use the preview for fast cataloguing and re-purposing the DNG.
Can your XML settings be embedded into the DNG for safe keeping? Capture One would also need to read and apply those settings.

It can certainly be brought forward as a feature request.
I was missing the information that you where referring to DNG file.
First time around we have implemented strait RAW DNG support in and out.
Of course this and other features will be implemented as we go along.0 -
Hi Ulf, Of course this and other features will be implemented as we go along.
This is very good news. I thought your DNG support in Capture One was complete and Phase One were not interested in adding previews, etc.
Two final points. Now Capture One 4 settings are XML and cross platform embedding the data into converted TIFF, JPEG and DNG as XMP should be added as an option. Embedding it in the DNG means our adjustments have more security.
Lastly, DNG supports versioning. I understand you are in high level talks with Adobe. DNG2 is supposed to support multiple thumbnail and previews. Phase One should consider embedding Variants to DNG2 when it arrives along with their settings.
