Hierarchical keywords versus catalog sets?
I am confused about when it is best to use one versus the other. My image catalog containes biological taxonomic naming that I have been assigning by catalog set (drag from thumbnail view). One taxonomic node per set or subset.
It would be very helpful and appreciated to hear a brief contrast between the two.

Here are my general rules of thumb: - Use Hierarchical Keywords for content-specific tagging (especially where a deep hierarchy is involved).
- Use Catalog Sets to create usage-specific groups.
Hierarchical keywords are ideal for tagging images according to biological taxonomy such as:
1. Mammals
.... 2. Carnivores
........ 3. Cats
........ 3. Dogs
If you drag your dog image onto the Dogs keyword in the hierarchy, the image automatically inherits the parent keywords Mammals and Carnivores. This is a great time saver.
Catalog Sets are "virtual folders." They are ideal for grouping images according to intended use, e.g., a Web gallery, images submitted to a publisher, final client selections for printing, etc. Catalog Sets can be nested to reflect biological taxonomy, for example to organize multiple Web galleries, but they don't (and shouldn't) provide the inheritance functionality of hierarchical keywords.
Here are two more distinctions:- Hierarchical Keywords are "permanent." An image that contains a dog will always be tagged with the keyword "Dog".
- Catalog Sets are "temporary." A particular Catalog Set serves a purpose for the moment (e.g., a gallery) but you might delete the Catalog Set later if you no longer need the gallery.
Also, Hierarchical Keywords get added to the general flat list of keywords for that image (useful for IPTC purposes). Catalog Sets do not.0 -

This is the only difference but it has consequences.
Create, edit, or delete a term adds, modifies or deletes the corresponding keyword.0 -
Thanks. This is interesting and really helpful. The inheritance makes keywords perfect for taxonomy. Now to convert all catalog sets to keywords. ☹️ Well, it will really be a breeze since I can just drag whole sets into the keyword hierarchies.
This will probably solve the bug I ran into (other post) using Catalog sets for this purpose. Thanks for the replies!
Now for a moment of appreciation. So great that Phase One took this over! Been wanting to merge the taxonomy hobby with photography for ages. Finally, there's a way!!! 😊0
