    If this can help:

These TIFF files are film scans that were edited in Lightroom. So they contain XMP data. But other TIFF files have been processed the same way and they are not locked as "view only". So I'm wondering what makes these "view only" files specific?

Got it! The files that are marked as "View only" have the metadata field "Photometric Interpretation" set as "BlackIsZero". That is, they were saved in Grayscale mode, not in RGB.

I was not aware of this limitation of C1.
