How to decrease thumbnail size (and catalog file size)

Hello:
I am a user of iView 3 (by now I did not see a point in upgrading to EM) on an iMac running Snow Leopard. My main catalog reached the 2GByte limit, but I do not want to split it up. I use quite large, variable thumbnails and I figured, if I change to smaller thumbnails, the catalog file should shrink.

In order to do that, I thought I simply reduce the view size of the thumbnails via the minus button in the upper right corner of the iView screen and then press cmd+b to rebuild the selected elements, just as it works if I want to increase the thumbnail size.

Alas, decreasing does not work. iView does something, but the thumbnail and therefore the catalog size remains the same.

Any suggestions?

  To reduce the thumbnail size stored in the catalog file you need to change the thumbnail size in the presets, not in the display view. Then view all images, select all, cmd-B.
  
  That would do the trick.

  For some odd reason, the "preset" as you called it, is in the "Edit" menu. I switched it to "variable" and then zoomed out so that I have reasonably small thumbnails in the display. I am "rebuilding" all of them and the catalog file now shrinks significantly from 1.8 GByte to 1.1 GByte.
