Is the jump from Expression Media to Media Pro worth it?
Hi everyone,
Am pretty new here and am jumping right in with a question.
I have been using Expression Media since it came out and before that iView Pro.
I just downloaded Media Pro, and, other than the black background, I can't see an immediate difference to Expression Media.
All I use it for is to catalog my images, and so far have not interfaced the catalogs with C1.
Would you please tell me some reasons I should upgrade to Media Pro?
Thank you.

While I gradually moved up from iView to Media Pro 1.4 I am not sure it has really helped me that much. There were name changes and changes of the GUI as you recognized but underneath it seems not much has changed, at least not what my workflow is concerned which is simply tagging images with location, people, subject, etc. I understand that more cameras are being supported, there is some more-or-less working integration with Capture One which I don't use, bigger catalogues but still many report crashes, now support for Win8 (which I am not going to use for a while), XMP sidecar files, faster rendering, etc If Expression Media is doing all you need then there is probably no big need to upgrade. Personally, I doubt the future of Media Pro and if they indeed further develop it then it's probably for a tighter integration with Capture One and more editing features (unfortunately, that is also where Lightroom is going instead of making the main functionality more efficient). Considering this, my vote is for saving the money and see what happens. Just my 2 cents. 0 -

These are all good reasons, and summarize my feeling.
I use Capture One, and the better integration with CO was my primary reason for upgrading to MP.
Unfortunately, It isn't there yet, imo. It is better, but far from what was initially marketed. I also had to acquire a new set of codecs from FastPictureViewer, but they were worth it. I do all my initial rendering with Windows, not CO which I regard as too slow.
I still think it is better as a DAM than Lightroom, which I also use. There, the sidecar files communicate well. And LR is more stable.
There is another upgrade/fix coming soon (I was told) and I am hoping that fixes many of the CO communication issues.
The upgrade cost was within reason, so I'd say try the evaluation.0 -
Thank you so much.
Both of you confirmed my thoughts and i will stick with the trial for the time being.
One of the things i immediately noticed was that the the catalogs cant be read by each other. So i would have to build new catalogs for all i already have with Media Pro.
And yes, I am trying it to get camera support for my first non dslr. The nikon P7100 has a format that can't be read by expression media. Is there a place for new profiles, or is EM just not supported anymore?
Thanks again. You sharing your experience is much appreciated.0 -

The new MP 1.4.1 was just released today.
In the release notes they say
The Phase One renderer now supports the same images as Capture One 7.1.2
Re-Expression Media - I doubt it will be supported to add new cameras.0 -
Thank you Jim. 0
