DM33 Capture One DB upgrade to Pro
Hi everyone,
I'm in the process of switching from a DSLR setup to Mamiya DM33 and (through a rather obscure process I must say) managed to get a version of Capture One DB working. I also shoot an M9.
Currently I'm using lightroom and found that shooting uncompressed RAW, the importing and converting too DNG is actually a pretty good workflow, but lightroom has two significant drawbacks and one major annoyance:
- Cannot easily assign an ICC profile to a camera (I use Xrite Color Checker Passport to generate a neutral profile for lightroom).
- Moire (need I say moire ... my camera work isn't much better than my jokes btw)
- No 'traditional' levels adjustment.
So the upshot of it all is that I would really like to use only one package to manage and work on my images, I think Capture One can do most things that Lightroom can do and also deals with the three issues above. Can I upgrade or do I have to go and dump another 3/400 bucks or whatever it is on a full version?
Many thanks
Paul

The release notes say that the C1 DB 6.2 (free version for Phase/Leaf back owners) supports the DM33, and I can confirm that the pro version works well tethered or via card with my Aptus 75 which is very similar to the DM33 back (including compressed .MOS files now - yes!)

Hi Mark,
Thankyou for taking time to respond. I can confirm it does work but only for the DM33. I was wondering more about using Capture One for my entire workflow, it seems I need to upgrade to pro for my other camera and maybe even scanned images to work.
Warm regards

Ok, I've managed to download the manual and in the section Activation of Capture One it says: Activation of Capture One DB is free and compatible with the Mamiya DM System. To Activate Capture One 6 or Capture One Pro, you will need to obtain a license key.
I guess what I need to know is how I obtain the said license key, is it included or is it an upgrade?
Phrased a different way I guess I'm asking is what license is included with the DM System?
Many thanks,

The marketing concept of Capture One 6 (and earlier) is that there is a free self-activating DB (data back) version which provides raw file and tethered support for Phase One, Mamiya and selected Leaf backs. It has however all the advanced tools that you can find in the Pro version (same download, different activation).
The Pro version gives you full DSLR (including Leica M8/M9) support, plus tethered support for more Leaf backs, Canon and Nikon DSLRs.
Your first admission to Pro lists for 299 euro ex VAT from my part of the internet, you might be listed in another currency, from the Phase One online shop. You can always try to get a discount from your DM33 dealer. 😉
For full details see the release notes which you can open from your DB installation (Help menu). You can try Pro for 30 days. Deactivate your installation and after restart in the welcome screen choose Pro.
Capture One uses ICC profiles for input (camera) and output. You can not use X-Rite Colorchecker Passport for that (although workarounds seems to exist, not sure how exotic that is).0 -
Paul,
Thanks for the confirmation on that. I also spotted this in the manual:
* When running the application, choose Digital Back only mode. This software is free and compatible with the Mamiya DM System.
I'll give the dealer a call on Monday to try an sweet talk him, esp. as I want to buy a lens in the coming weeks!
