SESSIONS are confusing
I've not been able to really understand how to use sessions properly in my workflow and its driving me crazy.
In the top corner of my C1 screen, there is a box with the current session name in it. There is also the little down arrow dohicky that would indicate that if you click on it, you will see other sessions that you have created. Clicking on the downarrow dohicky only shows the most currently created session and no other.
If I create a NEW SESSION, which I have been doing, everything works just fine as long as I'm working on that session. However, getting to an old session seems impossible. PLUS, all the conversion settings that I used for an OLD session now seem to be gone tho I would think that if I could actually access the old session, I would get back the conversion parameters.
What gives with this. Its driving me crazy. Why can't I access my old sessions??????????

Another question.... I just created a new session. When I created it, I specified that C1 should use the auto-created develops folder that is a subfolder of the sessions folder under my root directory. This means that all the conversions from RAW will be dumped into the Develops folder under the Session Folder.
I then selected another Session (except that the NEW Session name still shows in the white Session Name box) AND, when I checked the Process Tab, the conversion folder is now set for the NEW SESSION Develops folder and not the Develops folder under the old session.
This is a real PITA frankly. OH... I did determine that it had not lost the conversion settings for each picture. I normally boost saturation by 7% on every image from the Canon 5D and I could see that that change was there.
After I understand this stupid Sessions deal, I need to tackle profiles.

I posted a request asking about clarification on the way sessions operate and got zip/zero/nada responses. I'm either really dumb about sessions or sessions are terribly confusing to everyone and noone has a really good answer.
Makes me wonder why I'm even bothering breaking things down by sessions.

It sure is confusing and I don't really even think about it anymore. I might be getting this all-wrong so wait for a pro from Phase One to answer it right. Here is a statement in one of the FAQ areas.
(Open/Create new Session allows the naming of a Collection.
Yes, Session and Collection are one in the same, a folder of images with the name displayed upon the tab.)
I guess that means the Folder, Session and Collection are all the same thing.
As far as I'm concerned, a session or collection is just a folder that is created when you click the “open, create new session†icon…then a corresponding tab is created that is made persistent. I'm not sure if the tab is considered the session or just the folder. I know that you can delete the tab but that does not delete the folder.
I just create all my folders and subfolders with the browser and if I want a folder to have a persistent tab I click the icon " Insert Current Folder as Permanent Collection" which means the tab will stick until you hit the icon "Delete the Active Collection" which only closes the tab but leaves the folder untouched.
I have not figured out what the drop down sessions box if for so I ignore it.
I’m sure Capture One will respond to help us out with this…I would like to see if I am on the right track with this, if not I did not mean to confuse anyone.

John and Lee,
Apologies the Knowledge Base article is not helping. It will be edited to make this very clear.
Session = Collection = Folder …yes, these are synonymous and they are simply a folder of RAW image files.
There are a few Methods to add a new Session into Capture One PRO, and most find one to their liking and stay with it.
1 – Use the Phase One Media Reader >to establish a Session folder and download RAWs from CF Card directly into this session
2 – icon > Add or Change collection > to select an existing folder of images
3 – icon > Open/Create New Session > to set a folder location for a Tethered shooting session
4 - icon > Browse folders… > to select an existing folder of images
1- This tool will launch when card is inserted. Can set location and change filenames during download. Some like this feature, others do not. It can be disabled.
2-Use to select images already downloaded from CF card. Click icon, Select folder. The Session Tab name will be same as folder name but can be changed. This icon will also Change the name of an existing Session
3- Use this Set-up for a Tethered shooting Session for images to arrive directly into Capture One
4 – Use to select a folder of images already downloaded from CF card. Clicking Browse folders… shows a file tree. Select the folder, and then you can click the icon above tree that is the Insert current folder as permanent collection
If this is not done, the text on the tab is italicized. In the top corner of my C1 screen, there is a box with the current session name in it. There is also the little down arrow dohicky
This box is used for Method 3.
It is used to set session folder and to change the name of captures as the arrive into a Session during a Tethered shoot if necessary.
This text box also is used for the Batch Renaming of files within a Session.
Knowledge Base Article # 2163

Sessions show as named tabs above the Thumbnails. Placing your cursor on the tab will show the # of files.
You can navigate through Sessions by the left and right pointing arrows on the right side of the tabs and by using the down arrow / pulldown to the right of these.
This pulldown shows the Session names and # of files.
Clicking on the icon Delete the active collection will remove the Session tab only.
The folder of images remains at their location. Once removed, you can easily re-select using Methods 2 or 4.
Hope this help clarify Sessions.
Sincerely,
