tethered shooting with 5d mark ii
I have spent 2 hours trying to get either my 5D or 5D Mark II to perform tethered shooting with the trial version of C1 Pro. I can see my cameras in the utilities attached to the USB and now I can get the C1 to perform Activities Attaching Camera - Estimating time remaining but it never connects
I'm not sure what else to try. I really want to buy this s/w but only if it works how I'd like - can someone help
Thank you

Make sure no other (Canon) software is running, hijacking the connection to the camera, preventing CO5 to connect. Best to remove the CF card. 0 -
Thank you Paul for getting back to me. I trashed all the Canon utilities, restarted and opened the trial version of C1. Attached the camera with USB cable that came with the camera turned it on and C1 picks it up but again the window Activities comes up - Attaching Camera - Estimating Time Remaining. The camera has no CF card in and the display just flashes Busy. This is the 5D Mark 1
Any other ideas?
Thank you0 -

With the 5D, you might want to check the communications setting in the camera menu (yellow section). From the top of my head, select PC Connection (not Print/PTP).0 -
And you might benefit from this tip from Drew/Phase One regarding firmware in a similar issue:

Hi. I had this issue with my 5d (see link above). But now I can't get my 5dMKII to connect. System Profiler and EOS Utility show USB connection. I just updated the firmware to 2.0.7. Could that be an issue? I didn't try tethering to C1 5.1.1 prior to updating the firmware though. C1 4.8.3 reads the MKII. I am running MBP OS 10.5.8, C1 5.1.1 PRO activated and MKII firmware 2.0.7. Thanks! 0 -

This combination of software/hardware/firmware should work. It does for me and I have the same combination of parameters. Is CO 4.8.3 tethering with your 5D mkII on the same computer? Check for any software that might connect before CO 5.1.1 connects (EOS Utility, Image Capture, whatever). Start CO 5 before your connect your camera.0 -
Same computer, same cable, same everything. The only difference being closing one version of C1 and opening an older one. Hmmm, I will give it another go! 0 -
Ok, it still won't connect (nothing else is hijacking the connection) so am going to open a support case. Thanks! 0 -
Canon released a firmware update on 5/25/10. (2.0.7)
As no version of Capture One has been released since this update we cannot vouch for it's function. Please, in the future, do not upgrade firmware without first understanding what it changes and if it is compatible.
In the meantime, please download and run Capture One 5.0.2 which does not seem to exhibit the same issue as 5.1.1. We have yet to confirm if the firmware update is the cause for the OP issue so my post here is not confirmation, simply speculation.0 -

To continue speculation - not confirmation - I have no problems with CO 5.1.1 Pro, Canon 5D mkII f/w 2.0.7, OS X 10.5.8 tethering.
Drew, I have still case running on tethering issues, you can contact me on that if you need any further assistance.0 -
Paul,
As always, thank you!0 -
I have been successfully using Capture one pro 4 to tether with my canon 5d mark II, then suddenly it just stopped working? I have tested out the usb cable and it's not that. So I updated my firmware to 2.0.7 and that did nothing too, so I reluctantly paid 80 euros and upgarded 5.1.1 capture and that hasn't resolved the issue either. Any help would be appreciated greatly as i have a fashion shoot on monday and it's all going to be a nightmare without it 0 -

As you might have read in earlier posts in this thread, some first aid involve checking whether the camera does show up in System Profile (under USB) and next, whether you can connect to the camera with EOS Utility.
EOS Utility could be your temporarily workaround, in case normal tethered operation with Capture One Pro is not restored before your next shoot.0 -
I know the following may sound ridicules and defies all logic, but as I posted in an earlier thread I purchased a new macbook pro and tethered my 1Ds 3 and it would only work through a USB hub or the monitor, also I connected camera and same cable to other Macs with C1 and it worked fine. After talking to apple and going through every possibility and replacing the unit, they decided it was a software problem and would get back to me. I the meantime I tried another USB cable on the off chance and it worked no problem. Egg on face all round.. 0 -

Pretty amazing, thanks for reporting back. We can all learn from such a "it's not what you think" experience which perhaps occur 'more often than you think'. 😁0 -
This is definitely broken for 5.1.2 with a 5D Mk2 on OSX 10.6.4 (not that that should matter), I am experiencing this every 10 minutes or so while shooting intensively.
Have tried with various 5d 1.x and 2.x firmwares. Have not yet reproduced on 5.0.2; so it may be a regression issue in C1.
The explanations about cables, shooting with a CF card etc seem a bit far fetched/exotic.
The camera appears to be present in the USB subsystem, other software etc reliably.
Is anyone aware of this being traced to a root cause? Will also raise a support ticket; but wanted to shortcut to the problem if possible rather than going on a wild goose chase..
Cheers,

Lee,
I'll keep an eye out for your support case.0 -
Ulf advised me that due to problems with the Canon SDK, I need to downgrade from Snow Leopard to Leopard to resolve this. I'm going to get a new machine and use it for C1 exclusively, and try that as downgrading would be too fiddly.
I removed my rant about testing etc.
