    Forgot one:

    5.
The image count is inconsistent, and shows different results depending on where you look. In this example I've tagged my TIFs with the purple colour tag:

    * Purple filter shows there are 29 images
    * When the purple filter is selected, thumbnail view shows there are 48 purple tagged images
    * When verifying the actual number with Windows file explorer, the number of TIFs is 47.

    6. I now noticed Capture One seems to be dropping metadata... I've spent quite some time tagging my photos with:
    * GPS coordinates
    * Site name

I've confirmed with GeoSetter that indeed the GPS data is now missing in a few images (100% sure they were correctly tagged), and the site names are missing from about one third on the images. No other software except CaptureOne has been used on these images. Hours of work gone.

Is anyone from PhaseOne monitoring these forums?

[color=#FF0000:6cm49lw5]UPDATE:[/color:6cm49lw5] I have a theory what might have happened to the missing GPS coordinates/tags. I deleted a few TIF files for these particular photos, which had the same name as the RAW file (obviously with different extension). I suspect CaptureOne deletes the XMP file when this happens, not taking in consideration that the RAW file uses this XMP as well.

Sometimes employees from Phase One chime in, but you cannot count on it.

You should report all the problems you found by creating a support case.

Phase One is very good at responding to such bug reports.

FWIW, I noticed a number of catalog issues myself, such as image counts being incorrect. C1 (V11) is furthermore unable to move images from one location to another without requiring some manual reconstruction (for instance, some subfolders get lost and must be re-introduced to the catalog). It doesn't matter whether I move the images within C1 or move them outside C1 and then "relocate" them.

It would be nice if core functionality (including proper previews without fuzziness or colour issues) had the utmost priority over adding features like "annotations" which I assume only a fraction of C1 users depend on whereas everyone using catalogs suffers from respective core functionality not being a 100% reliable.

There appears to be an ongoing problem with Capture One 12 delivering inconsistent filtering results. Consequently, several weeks ago I opened a support case to report this. After two weeks, the case is still open, and the support techs on my case deny there is an issue—even though I have documented the problem with multiple screen shots. Many people have reported this issue on this forum and others.

All I'm receiving on my support case are the same questions, over-and-over. With the most recent response the tech asked me: "Can you replicate this in a new catalog?" As a professional photographer, that makes me very cranky. It's not my job to test Capture One code.

If Phase One / Capture One wants to target professional photographers, they need to respond to reported problems. So far, I'm only receiving denials.

    Karl,

If Phase sold the hardware to run the software and therefore offered a so called 'turnkey' solution I would agree with you.

In the mad world of 'PCs' and, to some extent, 'Macs' then I don't think you can expect anyone to test everything 100%. Many large organisations seem to manage much less then that - one of the reasons I have chosen to stay with Windows 7 as long as I can.

To ask if you can replicate the problem in a newly created catalogue is not unreasonable if the support team has been completely unable to reproduce the issue you have described to them.

That said there are a number of variables involved in coming up with counts in an interactive environment like Capture One and so plenty of scope for something to not provide the results expected. Not an easy subject to discuss on a forum with much chance of being able to offer an explanation and solution.

Not sure if this will be useful in this discussion but here is something I have discovered about COP12 catalogues with regard to the folder structure on disk.
If there is a top level folder (parent folder) that contains images in sub-folders but no images in the parent folder, COP12 appears to be unable to maintain the folder structure at import. The result is that sub-folders get elevated, in a somewhat random manner, and the actual folder structure on disc is not correctly reflected in the COP12 catalogue.
When this happened to me I found that it would be corrected if I place a single "dummy" image in every parent folder that had no images. If a sub-folder was also a parent to further sub-folders the same applied. The "dummy" image was always named as such.

With regard to waiting for the catalogue to load - I have found that if you close the catalogue while it is focussed on a folder or collection with only a small number of images, it opens quickly the next time. This appears to occur because COP12 loads all your previews every time it opens - so if your catalogue is opening at a folder or collection with a large number of images (especially if it is set to "all images") there will be a long waiting period.

The above applies in my system which has specs above the recommended minimum for COP12 and a catalogue with only 37,500 images.

This is my first post so I am not yet sure how to attach a signature.

I think one would find that, for, inter alia, optimisation of the available screen real estate, C1 is mainly interested in images rather than folders. This folders with images are of interest. Folders without images are not - at least they are not until one wants them to be visible for some purpose.

At that point there are the "Show in Library" and "Show in Explorer" options (using sessions - something similar in Catalogues as I recall) that offer the more complete information and access (via Explorer) that should mirror everything else done through the operating system based functions.

This approach seems to be the reverse of the of the approach taken by any of us with a traditional "filing cabinet" approach but is much more powerful and flexible if one can adapt to it.

The challenge, of course, is where one also wished to operate outside the application or with other applications that have their own way of working (or perhaps nothing except references to "folders"). In such a situation the need to understand and 'manage' the combined workings of the applications may become onerous.

Sure, for troubleshooting purposes it makes sense to check whether the same issues occur using a fresh catalogue.

However, the respective outcome is immaterial regarding the main point that C1 has created an inconsistent catalogue. While you are correct in pointing out the challenges of managing a wildly diverse hardware and software space in the Windows eco system, you should acknowledge that C1 is solely responsible for managing the database (aka "catalogue") of images and any inconsistencies introduced are certainly not caused by any Windows drivers, hardware components, etc.

Superfolders, i.e., folders higher up in the hierarchy that contain subfolders, are an important organisational tool. It doesn't matter whether "Weddings" or "Holidays" contain any images or not, they are usefully organising the image space.

One could achieve the same via albums or other C1-specific means but it should be possible to maintain organisational structure without depending on C1, whether it is supporting partial backups, collaborations, or simply keeping one's options open to change to another software solution. I moved from Lightroom to Capture One and having my images organised in file system folders rather than Lightroom-internal containers proved to be very valuable.

As an aside, if screen real estate were a priority then it would have made sense for Phase One to not assume that everyone runs 4K displays and hence make any font size increases (V11 -> V12) optional. The new font size is unhelpful for regular full HD displays and forces users to deal with collapsing tools and/or switch between tool tabs more often than previously.

In comparison, having a few more folders shown in the folders pane is completely unproblematic as the folder structure is treated as scrollable content and only a few levels are added by organisational folders that do not contain any images themselves.
