Moving to the next photo

Why is it sometimes, in full screen, I can move to the next shot by pressing the right arrow and most often not? I noticed I can't when I am in New Layer mode and only sometimes when in Background. When manipulating hundreds of shots, this is a waste of time as one can only move forward (or backwards) by opening the browser and clicking on the next frame... ☹️

  I have assigned a short cut to my Wacom tablet to advance to next picture using an express key or CMD + right arrow on the keyboard.
  
  I also get this when moving from picture to picture sometimes, so use the above so I don't have to go back to the browser.
  
  But to answer your question, I don't know why it does it !

  In the default shortcut set, Arrow key is not the shortcut for next variant per say. Arrow can also be used to adjust a value so it depends which item is focused in the UI.
  
  Try with CMD+L/R arrow (this is the official shortcut for next or previous variant) irrespective of focused element.
  
  You can modify these defaults in the shortcuts menu if you find it not to your liking.
