How to remove selections from batch..adding to batch

Version 4LE How do I remove a large number of photos from the batch without selecting each one individually and deleting? Control-A or shift A doesn't select them all in batch.
I read the pdf on getting photos into batch..can't figure it out. If I select photos based on star ratings they show up in the center (viewer) but if I shift click on the process icon at top right ALL photos go into batch, not just the star selections. How about a step by step answer rather than just "view the modifier PDF"? A real answer would help alot of people!

  The only way I have found to do it is to use ctrl click, if wish to select out of sequence images or shift click to select sequential images. Then hit delete.

  Shift+click also works to select a list of images in the queue. Select one at the top with the mouse; scroll down; shift+click one below. All items in between will be selected as well.
  
  Ctrl+A (select all) will always have effect on the images in the Browser (thumbnails) even when you have clicked on the queue in advance. I think this is a bug and will file this one later this week in a case with PO.
