Creating new image from masked area
Is it possible to extract the contents of a masked area into a new image as a way of removing the background?

Short answer: no, it's not.
Useless answer: CO is a Raw converter, not a graphic editor so it's not intended to do such things.
However, as a funny workaround, you could create an accurate mask of the subject you want to extract, invert it and work on the background to make it flat and easily removable by another software. For example, if you move the exposure slider all the way down and then move the green shadows output slider in Levels tool up to 255, your background should become a flat high saturated green. If one layer shouldn't be enough to reach your goal, create another layer and repeat the steps copying the mask from the previous layer. You can create a white background very quickly simply moving the black output slider in Levels tool up to 255 or a black background doing the opposite with the white output slider. Basically you can have the background that you want if you just think how to obtain it. However you should rely on another software for compositing too (CO only has a simple Overlay tool intended for editorial use that I've never used), so you can extract your subject there too and have a greater control on what you're doing.0 -
Many thanks! I will give this a try later today. 0
