Depends on what you're doing on it. I wouldn't use one as a primary editing machine since C1 is power-hungry, but I've been running a late2011 MacBook Air as my location capture machine since 2011. I'm using Yosemite with the most recent C1, tethering to a P45 and a Canon 5D2. It's slow in spots (notably, exporting files) but runs fine--and you can't beat the weight, convenience, and durability. Mine sure shows how many times it's been bashed around on location, but it's still going strong after all these years.
A few things:
1. Make sure you max out on CPU and RAM when you buy it. The default 4GB is barely enough to get the job done, and you can't upgrade after you buy. 8GB is much better.
2. If you're tethering to an older FireWire-only Phase MFDB, buy the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter and make sure you force the MFDB to run on battery since the adapter doesn't provide enough power over FireWire to charge. Ideally, buy *two* TB-FW adapters and keep one in your bag so you have a backup if the first one fails on you. They're pretty much the weakest link in the tethering chain.
3. If you're moving images off it onto another larger machine for editing, get the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter, or a docking station that has one built in. Wireless usually won't quite cut it if you're having to move a 20GB+ session across, unless you're more patient than I.
4. The 13" non-Retina screen works fine for previewing, but it's a bit of a squeeze. I'd avoid the 11". Plan to customize your tool layout to make the most of limited real estate--and/or plan to plug an external display in.0 -
Just buy one of those new Macbook Pro's, the 13" one. I've got one of the newer ones with 8 gig which I take with me all the time to my photography shoots (and it sits perfect on a Tether Tools table). It runs Cap One just fine.
It's no bigger than the Air, just a little thicker but still really light. Hope it helps.0 -
I am running an 11 inch 2013 MacBook Air with 8 gigs of ram and an older flash drive 250GB.
It is great for travel.
The key board is not robust enough. I think the body has some flex in it.
Mostly I love it. And the thunderbolt ethernet connection that a previous poster is good advice.0 -
Thank you very much for the advice . 0 -
How big are your RAW files? Do you have a 80 MP medium format back or a DSLR 24 MP? I am using a MacBook Air (13 Zoll, Mitte 2012), 1,8 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB. I have a Nikon D3x as my main body. 24MP RAW files are no problems with developing pictures with Capture One 8.3. The only "problem" is a export of a large set of pictures. This may take some minutes. My problem with the Macbook Air displays is the worse display with only 45% sRGB. I am using on my desktop a second monitor, but on the road a better display will be helpful. My old Macbook (no Air, no Pro) 13" had 98% sRGB. 0
