CO-9
Version 9 is out and the advertisement says:
Apply the precise curve you want with a Local Adjustment Mask. Target the exact areas of your image that require the adjustment and leave out others that don't - with total confidence.
To me this meant that there was a curves tool added to the local adjustments tab and that once a mask was created you could apply curves to the masked area. Apparently that is an incorrect interpretation since there is no curves tool in the local adjustments tab and, if I create a mask and then change to the appropriate tab for curves to apply curves, it applies to the entire image, not just the masked part of the image.
Can anyone explain to me what they mean by this?
Thank you,

There are separate boards for version 9 (Mac and Windows).
I've tried the curve applied to a local adjustment and it works. I agree that curves didn't appear to be added to the local adjustments tab, but I assume you could add that tool to that tab if you wanted.
But you can proceed like this.
(1) create your local adjustment layer and brush on your mask.
(2) Go to the Exposure tab and the Curves tool. Click on the ... symbol and make sure that "adjust selected layer" is checked. It should then work.

I've now installed version 9 on two machines, and on the second one the curve tool does appear on the local adjustments tab. Perhaps it depends on whether I had a personal workspace loaded.

I had not seen that. My bookmark takes me to the current board so I never saw the version 9 board. Thank you for pointing that out to me. I will have to update my bookmarks.[quote="Ian3" wrote:

That does work. I had expected the curves adjustment to be added to the local adjustments by default. In earlier versions of CO I had tried adding various adjustments to the local adjustments tab to see if that would make them apply only to the mask, but it did not work so I did not assume it would work in this case.
In addition I did not see the Adjust Selected Layer until you pointed it out to me.

I think your assumption there is very likely correct Ian.
One of the things one sort of forgets about with an upgrade is that the process has no "mandate" for updating personalised settings. And rightly so of course.
However is could be a nice thing to produce a short reminder document that advises which new features are available and where they likely best fit. Just to save all of us having to work it out for ourselves - especially remembering which tools now work with layers!
(Well, it's not so hard .... but .....)
