I will be trying this in the coming months and will keep you posted on the results. For what it's worth, we're running a Sonnet PCIe USB3 2-port card in a Mid 2012 Mac Pro 12core

    Hi again,

Those are the exact 2 cards I'm considering. Looking forward to hearing both of your experiences!

    Hi

Have tried the CalDigit USB3 adaptor in a MacPro 5.1

Works OK with the Lexar card reader but causes a kernal panic when the D800E camera is plugged in.

Also after using the card reader USB2 keyboard becomes slow so unplugging the card reader when not needed is advisable

Are you connecting both the card reader and the camera at the same time? Are you sure its a kernal panic or just App crash? Never been a good idea to have a camera and reader connected (esp. when on the same protocol).
