Automatically Upgrade Engine

Is there a way to automatically upgrade the Capture One engine when I open an old image or do I have to do this manually for each one?

  You can select all the images then hit the Upgrade button, and it will upgrade all of them at once. BUT... do you really want to do that? Some edits that you were happy with before may not look right anymore: for instance, the Levels tool now works a bit differently and images that had used it might need re-adjusting if you upgraded them. I generally only upgrade images on a case-by-case basis, and if I have adjusted them before I usually make a cloned variant or a new variant before upgrading.
