MP 1.1 NEF Metadata write-back

Ehem. Yes, this "feature" is a carry over from when the software was Expression Media. The gist of the issue is NC, MP and Adobe do labels and ratings differently so Microsoft in their wisdom (blindly followed by Phase On) chose not to write the labels or ratings to NEF's.

Matt Heaney, a fellow EM (and now MP user) has written some scripts and helper functions for getting around this "feature" on Windows platforms.

You can download the info at

You need the NEF Helper Tool, the MJH Progress Dialog, and the Expression Media Scripts.

Download all the files into a folder in the scripts folder.

Expand the NEF Helper Tool and the MJH Progress Dialog. You will need to run regsvr32 for each of the two dll's to register them.

Then you need to edit Matthew's scripts as they were written for EM not MP. Change the App ID from
"Expression.Application" to "PhaseOneMediaPro.Application". While you are editing the scripts, you have to uncomment out the appropriate label/rating terminology to use. It's well described in the comments of the script.

It works fine as I have just a couple of minutes ago refreshed some ratings on my system. If you are running Windows7 you will have to make these mod's as an administrator for them to work properly.

Sorry if this seems obtuse, but it does work. Matt told me recently that he is working on an installer for the scripts.

    take care,

    chris

    chris,
thank you for your answer. I cannot believe, that this major issue is still alive. No wonder, that so many users were driven away to alternatives.
As I feel not too much pressure in this matter, I will lean back and see who is faster:
PhaeOne fixing this (as I think, it is their job to do) or another software manufacturer getting finally out their cataloge program which is announced for the first quarter of 2012.
If this matter is not fixed by then, PO loses another customer. Simple.

Besides the missing ratings and labels, I don´t like the fact, that MP writes into IPTC fields and empties the XMP fields. As there is an option to write XMP-sidecarfiles, why is there no option to embed XMP into the file (and only XMP)?

But thank you for your help anyway. If I find the time, I will have a look at the scripts.

    Cheers
    Michael

My pleasure. To be honest, I'm less than enthralled with the whole PhaseOne experience. A lot of these gremlins remain and yet when PO introduces v1.1 of MP other than a couple of bugfixes, the major change is the Capture One integration is enhanced. That tells me where this is headed. I'm not now, and don't ever expect to be a Capture One user.

so, recently I've bitten the bullet so to speak and have followed the masses by purchasing a seat of LightRoom. It's in my Christmas satchel awaiting to be opened next month.

This will be the third and last DAM application that I've purchased. If this doesn't work out, I'm done with them and will manage my files manually.

    good luck with your wait!

Just for info, I opened up a support case in this matter. Lets see, what comes out of this.

This is by the way not only affecting NEFs but also every other Raw format/converter that needs metadata in the raw file in order to have the output files also labeled correctly.

    Best regards
    Michael
