How do to view the "Media" size for a catalog

I have a question about catalog info disappearing from my catalogs. In the bottom left corner the size of all of the items in the catalog shows up. See here where it says the Media is 5.5 GB?

Other times that spot is empty. All I have to do is change views -- perhaps by looking only at a certain kind of image.

Can you explain what I need to do to see the Media size again? This piece of information is very useful and we do need to know what the size of everything in the catalog is.

  At what point does the size disappear? Can you provide a better example?

  After looking more closely I understand what it is doing with the "Media" field. It looks like it is adding up the file size of whatever is showing in the list/thumbnail view. It reports on the size immediately for small numbers of items (~1 seconds for 250 images or .004 seconds per image) however for a catalog with 1,800 images it takes about 10 seconds to show the size for everything (about .005 seconds per image).
  
  The catalog I was working on where it felt like the Media size was disappearing completely had 35,000 images. When I open the catalog it does not report the Media field. I have to wait about 3 minutes and 15 seconds before the Media size appears (in this case, 376 GB -- which is the same .005 seconds per image).
  
  So when switching from Show All to look at the 200 photos with a particular keyword I see the Media size show up in a second or two. When I Show All after having made no changes at all I have to wait another 3 minutes 15 seconds before the size is reported.
  
  Seems like it should remember the media size for items that have already been counted or just get faster at finding the Media size in the first place.
