DNG files in Media Pro - no thumbnails.
I'm new to Media Pro but have been using C1 for several years so it was natural to move to it.
To my chagrin, it won't display thumbnails for my thousands of DNG files. These were Canon files for the most part (and some Phase) converted to DNG before I knew better. These thumbnails all show up in Finder on my Mac, in LR and other image programs. Further, if I click on Media, the full file is rendered - but still no thumbnail.
My Leica DNG files are fine, my Sony ARW files are fine and all my unconverted Phase files are fine.
Having spent the best part of $200 on the Media Pro, I really expected it would handle DNG files. Am I missing something, or have I been "had"?
Any help appreciated!
Bill

Bill,
1. Are there embedded thumbnails in the DNG files?
2. Have you tried to use the Apple Render Engine?0 -
Drew, I don't know!
I thought that one of the characteristics of DNG files was that all data was embedded in them rather than in a sidecar file. I assumed my DNGs had thumbnails because they show up in other programs like LR and Finder - but perhaps it's those programs that create them.
As for the Apple rendering, is this an option somewhere in the Media Pro preferences? I don't have it on this computer to check.
Thanks for taking a look at this!

Drew all Adobe DNG files have a built in thumbnail even if you have not embeded a preview at conversion.
I'm not on a Mac but with Windows if the rendering engine is set Phase One then you will see thumbnails on import but not be able to render previews, if set to Windows imaging componant (Apple would be the equivalent I guess) on import then you get nada, no thumbnails and no preview rendered.
Now this problem existed on ME2 until a patch was issued by Microsoft which gave you the choice of using Windows/Apple or Manufacturer, setting Manufacturer cured the problem but needed a embeded preview in the DNG file to build a preview from.
Drew also with Windows 7 if left set to Phase One it cannot build previews of any image whatever the file type, I hope this helps.0 -
Hi
I can confirm some strange and probably bugged behaviour on MP1 DNG importing on Windows 7.
1) Using the WIC (latest Nikon WIC by the way) rendering no DNG internal thumbnail or preview image is imported. Even if they both exist in the DNG file.
2) Using the PhaseOne rendering the imported thumbnail and preview is NOT the Adobe ACR created one but the PhaseOne (I guess, because I have not installed PO on the system). Any change on DNG using ACR is not reflected (but internal preview and thumbnails are updated).
Using the latest patch of EM2 works correctly (using both WIC and Manifacturer settings) importing and showing the thumbnail and the preview. because there is no real rendering but the JPEG embedded image is extracted, the WIC/Manifacturer should be uninfluent.
Because DNG is a premium format for RAW archiving, is quite strange that this erroneous behaviour has passed QA tests! Has the software been tested only on Capture One systems?
Can other users confirm the behaviour? By the way, the DNG has been created with both 6.4 ACR and previous releases so the 1.3 DNG spec is not the culprit.
Hope to have answers by Phase One. I will eventually open a support case.

Hi Drew,
I tried your suggestions and they worked! I should have seen for myself that in Preferences there is a box to be checked for embedded thumbnails. I don't need to use Apple rendering, Phase works fine.
Interestingly, while the thumbnails do show edits made in C1, they don't show crops, which is a bit puzzling but of no consequence for key-wording. When I click on Media or get Light Table, the crops appear.
Anyway, I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hi,
I used DNG files exclusively for my work. I use Adobe ACR to create them with full size previews, based on the settings and edits that I make. I have CS5 and the newest ACR version along with that. I use a Intel Windows Vista 64 based Dell system.
I have used iView and EM2 with these DNGs in the past without problem. With EM2, I can use either WIC or manufacturer based rendering for thumbnails, media view, and for the "Action" menu "Convert Image Files..." to generate output. This has worked to provide the image as adjusted in ACR for viewing within EM2 and for the output images. The output images match the pixel dimensions of the DNG, as I always select "Use Image Size."
With MP1, I don't get this behavior at all. The only rendering options I have are PhaseOne and WIC. If I select WIC, I get no thumbnails at all. If I select PhaseOne, I get thumbnails and media views, but it does not show the image based on the ACR settings. The output from "Convert Image Files..." is small in pixel dimension, not matching the DNG pixel dimensions/count.
Any help in solving this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

You may need to install a WIC codec for DNG. We have a commercial 64 bit DNG codec that works on Vista. http://www.ardfry.com/dng-codec
Microsoft used to have a page that listed the sources for WIC Codecs, but they took down their site after they sold EM2.0
