Color profile management problems
Hi,
My EM2 (v 2.0.2096.0) is running on Win XP home sp3. I've got a wide gamut monitor correctly calibrated with a spyder 3. Obviously "Color match" option is checked. I prepared two screenshots to show you what happens.
The first is about a Jpeg picture taken with an sRGB compact camera.

In the first column (1 and 4) you can see the original file, as shooted and imported.
In the second column (2 and 5) there's the same file just re-saved through an editor in its original color space (I chose to embed profile).
In the third column (3 and 6) the same but converted into Adobe RGB (I chose to embed again).
The first row displays the original files (1,2 and 3) while in the second are the full screen previews (4,5 and 6) generated according the preference settings.
Comparing all of them with their respective originals opened in another color management capable program, I see that:
- The original jpeg from my camera (1) is not displayed correctly while its generated preview (4) is.
- The jpg re-saved with the original color profile embedded (2) is displayed correctly while its generated preview (5) is not.
- The Adobe RGB file just seems to be managed correctly both in preview and in media but the preview (6) is just a little less saturated than the original file (5). I think they looks so similar because my monitor's gamut is almost perfectly 100% Adobe RGB.
I also compared different pictures from different cameras and different file types in different color profiles. I won't report all the combinations but previews and original files are never displayed with the same colors. In some cases the preview is correct and in some others the original file is.
E.g. this second screenshot of a 16bit tiff ProPhoto RGB.

As you see, comparing with CO 5 screen (3), the orginal file (1) is displayed correctly by EM2, while the preview (2) is over-saturated like the picture appears in any program unable to manage color profile.
I've read similar problems in the following article from microsoft support referred to a previous version of EM2
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954674 (go to "More Information" tab)
but the results of their combinations does not match mine results. In my case the problem afflicts every file type (well, I only tested Tiff and Jpeg) and every color profile (sRGB, Adobe RGB, ProPhoto RGB)
Is that normal? Does it happens to you too?

Hello Claus,
Not much feedback on the forum..., i can not help you either.
You best log a support call for this i think.

Thank you rmoorlag,
I'll do for sure. It was already in my plans 'cause I've got another problem with EM2 I have to ask about to support.
Anyway I opened this topic to know if that happens to other users too or just to me.0 -
Claus previews are not colour managed only when viewing the original files are they colour managed, not the best way to do things I'm afraid as you are not even viewing the previews in srgb but your monitors colour space profile, at least Adobe convert all the previews to srgb. 0 -

Thank you Paul. I don't know if you're confusing Media Previews with Thumbnails (maybe yes if you're speaking about Adobe behaviour). I'm not speaking about thumbnails but about full-screen previews (edit ---> thumbnails and previews ---> media previews: [ ] create full screen previews). They should be color managed as the media file (i.e. the original file when displayed in multimedia tab -uncheck "display preview at all times" option-). As you can see in my fisrt screenshot, for example, in the first column media file is not color managed while full-screen preview generated by EM2 is (image4 = image2 = image3). Also Microsoft, in the support article I linked before, stated for example:
When Color Match is enabled:
NEF: Previews and Media are over saturated.
WDP and AdobeRGB: Preview and Media a slightly under-saturated
TIF and AdobeRGB: Colors rendered correctly
Weren't Previews meant to be color managed, Microsoft wouldn't talk about them. So it's obvious for me that when Microsoft says "colors rendered correctly", is referring to both Media and Previews. Anyway in all of the Microsoft cases Media and Previews are always treated the same way. In my case Media and Previews colors are always different from each other. Some times Media colors are displayed right while Preview colors are not. Other times Preview colors are diplayed right while Media colors are not.[quote="rmoorlag" wrote:
Hello Claus,
Are you familiar with the DAM book forum? It's covering Expression Media profound.
Maybe you can find more information there also.
Roelof
Thank you again rmoorlag. I know about that forum, Peter Krogh and his book. Maybe I'll come and ask there too..0
