After Import - Moving Files Out of Aperture Library?

It will probably be better to move the files to the external HD before importing into Capture One. You can use the relocate masters tool in Aperture to automate this and create a sensible hierarchy. When it is finished you can the import the Aperture Catalog into CO and the photos will remain in the same place and not be tied up inside the Aperture library.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I can certainly do what you suggest instead. Is relocate masters in Aperture named 'relocate originals' now? Would you recommend exporting masters one project at a time or is there a way to move the masters of the entire library while still keeping it's structure?

Thanks again. I'm probably not the only Aperture user who's confused by this process.

Relocate Originals (it was renamed, been a while for me sorry) can do the whole library in one go. You may want to it a bit at time if its really large though. I did 30,000 in one go without a problem. Are your masters managed in the Aperture Library or are they referenced ?

If managed in the library then you really want to make them referenced first. You don't want CO referencing the masters inside the Aperture Library.

Yes, my Aperture library is managed, not referenced. This was my reason for the original question, I guess, besides the lack of instructions online. I may just export the originals to the external drive and tidy up there. That way the Aperture library remains intact (I think it does anyway - I need to double check this) until it's all imported and working smoothly on CO8. I lose albums doing it this way, I believe. I'll run a test first. Any other opinions are welcome.

Export is fine but it will mean you have two copies of the files. By relocating the masters you will free up some space and you will also be able to import the Aperture Library directly into CO which will retain your ratings, keywords and some albums and edits.

Yes, after some reading online, I agree with you. That will be the plan. I still don't know what the normal course of action is if you've already imported your Aperture library and now want to move the files out of the Aperture library. According to the webinars I watched the procedure appears to be: select your photos in CO8 and drag them to the new destination - managed in the catalog or another file location for referenced. Has anyone tried this?

That is possible but it will break your Aperture Library
