Basic Q: Look of raw image on import
When I load CinemaDNG (raw) into BMD Resolve, the image looks flat, low colour, low contrast etc.
When I load the same image sequence into CO7, the image already looks pretty good, and relatively minor adjustments are needed to result in a sharp, well balanced, colourful look.
Why? Is it because CO7 makes certain assumptions?
Neither my camera or lens are included in the Capture One profiles.
I don't have any preset adjustments, and I don't check the box for automatic adjustments on import.
Am I doing something wrong?
This is not a criticism. I love the look and the easier, quicker workflow than other raw editors, but I don't want to be using the product incorrectly.
Thanks.

I assume you are loading a BMCC or BMPCC raw ? If so, please note that we do not official support for these camera's yet. That means that colors, contrast, default exposure level and some CO-tools can be optimized for these cameras.
And with what "disclaimer" ( 😉 ) let's move on to the question. To all raw-pictures (normal dslr raw or cinemadng is viewed as the same thing here, as they all need de-bayering), we apply a per-camera default icc color profile and standard film curve. If you want, you can change these from the Color Tab -> Base Characteristics.
Resolve has the possibility to display the raw files in the same way as the log Prores output. This allows for a workflow identical to working the pro-res output. CO, being a different converter, does not have this workflow. Instead we have a nice set of tools, that for some will make grading video-footage much easier.0 -
We apply a default and basic ICC profile.
It's likely that BMD does not any profile at all or simply uses a Linear Curve0 -
Hmmm, it seems like you've approached my question as a negative. It's exactly the opposite.
I don't want my raw image to be pre-baked particularly. Although I trust the Phase One assumptions more than I trust the BMD ones.
Yes, I understand there is no support for the Blackmagic pocket Camera, or my lenses as it happens. No problem.
I have the option to import raw images into Resolve and see them almost naked. I was just wondering if there was that option in CO7.
So maybe I need to look again at the 'Base Characteristics' settings, although I have been using 'DNG neutral' and 'Film Standard', which I presumed were the flattest settings available.
I like what CO7 is presenting me with to be truthful. I just wondered if I was missing something as the images look almost finished on import in CO7, but require more work in another raw processor (Resolve 10).
No criticism, just looking to increase my understanding.0 -
Nop, no negativity here 😉
Try the "Extra Shadow" filmcurve for maximum flatness in the curves. Of course you can then still pull even more details out of the highlights and shadows with the HDR sliders.0 -
Will do.
As I said, I'm fundamentally happy with the initial look in CO7, just wanted to make sure I was using it correctly with CinemaDNG files.0
