Pink highlights with EOS 70D

Hello,

When i try to recovery highlights on burned sky on pictures from my canon eos 70d, pink cast appears systematically. I have not this ugly pink drift with DPP ou APERTURE. I sent a request to Phase One Support few months ago, but no news at this time.

Do you meet the same problem ? Is it possible to build an ICC Profile which fix this point ?

    Hmmm...

    I remember having problems with the 70D on its release, but I'm surprised there's still an issue with 8.2.2, which seems fine with my 70D files (although I still hate the 70D profile for its excessive orangeyness).

    I think access to one of your camera's problem files is needed. Upload it to (say) DropBox and let's have a look.

    I have not found a way to see the file and attempting a download gives me a file of just 170kb so I think there may be some sharing problems there.

    However I sometimes see a problem with files from a 600D (normally used with manual focus lenses) that sound just like your problem. Also form an S90 sometimes.

    In a very burned out sky (usually sky) trying recovery can leave a pink colour - green and blue values reduce but red does not.

    I have examples of 2 consecutive images, made using multiple shot mode, where one can be adjusted reasonably successfully and another cannot even though both have extremely over exposed areas and look identical.

    I have assumed that this is simply a strange anomaly. Whenever I have worked with both images I have found the over exposed areas have little to offer. The one the does not have a pink hue simply turns grey (using a big adjustment) and still has no detail. Grey or pink are equally useless in that situation in my opinion so I simply accept that the file is over exposed.

    On some very rare occasions I can produce different results in the overexposed areas using different software but not much different. Similarly I have, once or twice, seen a similar pink result using other software although usually less strong.

    It would be nice to see the matter resolved ... but as far as I can assess doing that would not really enhance the end results that can be achieved from the images.

    Your experiences may be different of course.

    I didn't expect not to see pink highlights, but I thought I'd check the file in Lightroom, Photo Ninja and DxO Optics Pro.

    In all of them - even Optics Pro, which for the most part is miserably undergunned in the highlight recovery stakes - no pink highlights; but sure enough they're there, large as life, in the Capture One conversion.

    That's pretty poor.

    I guess you'll need to raise a support case: Phase One needs to fix this.

    I have just re-checked a session from 2012 originally processed with C1 Version 6 and can confirm that despite some differences in processing the pink situation still exists in V8.

    It does not seem to be the camera profile - if I change to Linear the effect is still the same and the histograms can look somewhat unusual in the RGB channels although most obviously in the Red channel.

    However I have a lot of images all taken with the same camera and the same lens (Samyang 14mm f2.8 - manual settings so f-stop not recorded in the camera) in the same bright early morning conditions and no all of them exhibit the same behaviour when adjusting for highlights via HDR or exposure settings.

    In fact when I have just noticed is that the only images that seem to be clearly problematic where shot at ISO640 and ISO2500 (camera Auto ISO would have been set).

    All the other ISO values so far discovered and re-tested (100, 200, 400, 500, 800, 3200 that I can remember without re-checking) seem to be adjusted as expected.

    Before I decide whether or not to pursue this line of investigation I would be interested to know whether anyone is seeing a similar sort of anomaly perhaps related to ISO settings or specific lenses or whatever else might be identifiable.

    I was able to fix it for the most part.
    I uploaded it as a catalog so you can see.
    I know it isn't ideal, butI also would imagine blown highlights isn't an everyday occurrence.

    The folder name is Pink.cocatalog

    Thanks for your proposition. The use of color editor on a layer for blown highlights is a good way to fix the pink cast. And i agree with you, this isn't an everyday occurence.
    However, i'd prefer that Phaseone do correctly the job. I open today a second support case. Wait and see ;-(

    I don't consider the pink area to be on blown highlights, though. Lightroom and Photo Ninja were both able to recover detail from that part of the image.

    perhaps you agree with the wording - green channel in raw file is clipped, so ACR/LR & NN are able to invent (not recover) the details there in a more visually pleasing ways... but that is what it is - inventing the details that are not there (in green channel, R & B were not clipped).

    I have had another look at my challenged session and can see the problem for the following ISOs only.

    320
    640
    2500

    I would suspect that 1250 might also be a problem but I don't find any images in this set using that ISO.

    It would be interesting to know if anyone else sees the same pattern.

    For me, the problem is at 100 or 200 iso, but I don't konw for other sensibilities. May be the issue is present but I don't have examples. My caméra : EOS 70d with 18-135mm IS STM.

    I know how highlight recovery works, Deejjjaaaa: and the fact that only one channel - not all three - is blown, is precisely my point. Blown highlights = 255, 255, 255.

    I saw the rumour for the new camera yesterday. Looked nice there. I'll have a quick read (Download usually quite fast here) as suggested.

    Is there a 10fps version? 😉
