Not able to edit raw DNG or CR2 - Dumb problem?
Hey guys!
First of all, great forum and lots of helpful stuff here. I just downloaded Capture One 8 yesterday and have been watching "Getting Started" tutorials and info here on PhaseOne's website, but I cannot figure this problem out.
I am bringing RAW files that I shot with my Canon 5D MK II into Capture One and am not able to make any adjustments or use any tools on the files. It must be some dumb mistake.
I do have a bunch of files from a Phase One that I shot as well and these IIQ files open fine and all the adjustments are active and available to use, but the DNG and CR2 files nothing appears to be active and/or working.
Here are the screenshots of what I see:

I am totally stumped and I know that it must be some dumb mistake I am making. I am used to Lightroom and Adobe Camera RAW, but I want to make the step up to Capture One and I need to figure this out.
Thanks in advance!! 😄

Assuming you are running as a Trial C1 can be opened in several modes.
2 are Sony specific so ignore those for your purposes.
Capture One DB is the Phase One Digital Back version- Free but only useful with Phase family back.
Foe everything else you need to be running as the Pro version.
If you are running Pro and still have the problem we might need to look for something else.
Some types of DNG file are not currently supported. (A quick search of the forums may tell you whether this could be a problem for you.)
CR2 files should be fine in the Pro version although there may be some constraints still around for mRAWs - not sure but the release notes should provide some info. If the CR2s are from a very new camera I think you should be OK with the latest version release but again check the list of supported cameras.

ETA: Spotted you links for the DNG image screen. There is a small eye icon at bottom right corner of the thumbnails.

It indicates unsupported files.0 -
Thanks for the great info, Grant! I am running the trial to get my feet wet and see how it all works.
I can't test drive the trial for my CR2 files? The DNG files are Adobe DNG converted right out of camera in the case of the shots in the screenshots.
I just shot some straight up CR2 files and didn't convert them (shot with 5D MK II) and I still see that little eyeball that Grant mentioned.
Is this something that will work if I buy the pro version? I really want to start running everything through C1, but I don't know if I'm comfortable spending $299 when the trial doesn't work for the one thing I need it to do... 😕
Really appreciate the help thus far!0 -
OK, so you are running Pro mode?
If so I'm not aware of any obvious restrictions that would make the file View Only unless Windows permissions are in play here. Not something I have ever experienced or tested.
There are some switches in the Preferences to do with Tethered shooting but I doubt that is an influence here.
Have you imported the files to a Catalog? Or to a Session?
A 5DII should be no problem afaik unless there are any fancy Canon features applied - I use Canon but I'm not familiar with the 5DII so not sure if it has any particular traits that should be avoided for RAW processing. I don't recall reading about any recently.
DNG's are a slightly more complex game it seems. There are a number of standards around and not all of them are supported by everyone - you may need to get specific advice. If the DNGs are produced in camera there may be some notes in the Release Notes, or search the forum for the camera and any comments about it or create a Support Case (you can do that for a trial installation) and ask for an authoritative answer - but if you tell the forum which camera the DNGs come from my guess is that someone will chip in with an answer for you.

Hey Grant,
Here is what I did (sorry for the confusion 😄 )
Downloaded and installed the trial of Capture One 8. (Have not yet bought the full version)
I haven't adjusted any settings other than maybe tweaking the color of the UI.
I created a new Catalog and imported the RAW photos. (I tried both bringing them into the actual catalog folder, or just referencing them where they live on my drives, but no dice either way.)
I will stop converting everything to the dumb Adobe DNG if it means I can use Capture One. I'm not really concerned with the DNG situation. I at least need it to work with my CR2 files.
Trial C1 8 -> Create Catalog -> Import CR2 = No features available for editing.
If I can get the CR2 to work, I'm sold!
Thanks again for your help, man. Really appreciate it!0 -
Do you have write permissions on the image and catalog folders?
Is your catalog locked for some reason? (Menu>File>Unlock catalog)
Did you try it with a jpg file?
I suggest to open a support call and see if they can help you:

You have not answered the main question, if I am right.
Go the Help menu, About. Read out loud (just kidding, better post it here) what is written in white text on black background.0 -
OP, like others, I suspect you might be running the C1 DB version rather than the C1 Pro version. Can you confirm? 0
