Thank you Paul, that was helpful. I am mainly coming at it from an organizational point of view and I am thinking that it is better to have fewer sessions with more folders in each but at what point does that become hard to handle. For example, I do a lot of aerial photography. Should I create one master session with a folder for each flight? Or should I have one session per year of flights? Or one session per location, per client, per job? I would like to choose a system now and not regret it down the line and that is why I would like to know how others do it.

    Thanks again,

    Rick

    Hi Rick,

It depends on how many shots and folders a client or job entails. Generally I think f a session as a Job, with folders for each shot done within that job. In fashion this is broken down rather easily, you could have a session for the job and 1 folder for each look through out the day. I would shy away from one session per year as it could become unstable once the session becomes very large.

    Thanks Jon,
When I used Version 3 I would plan each session to fill up a DVD whenever possible and maybe that is the approach I should take now. I don't want to have number of sessions or folders or images reach an unmanageable number and I am hoping to start off with a good workflow.

One advantage I see with multiple sessions is that I can have two sessions open at once and compare the images on two screens. On the other hand with multiple folders in a single session I can create a Session Album and though I can drag images in from another session, the session album is only accessed from the one session.

Hi, I've been using simply one session per shot/setup and find it keeps things straightforward, esp if you're shooting to a laptop for example and beaming to another computer for processing. I'm probably missing out on a whole world of folder and album possibilities but this is a system I can manage.

Ok, that might not be a bad way to go. One session per job or project. Any suggestions on organizing what could pile up to hundreds or thousands of sessions? Separate folders for different dates or types of work each containing a number of sessions? Would that cause any problems when accessing work? Again I may be seeing potential problems where none might exist but I am basically starting over with new computer, new camera, and new version of Capture One and I want something that will work well in the future.

    Thanks for any replies,

    Rick

I collect them in DVD size chunks catalogued in Expression Media. You'll just need to look at your workflow and archive methods, whether online or off, and see what's going to work for you, and be consistent. Any which way you look at it this is the grunt side of productivity, best to keep it simple and automatic.
