    Hi There,

I must say I really love the DAM in Aperture. That said, some of the editing in C17 is beautiful. I almost do not need my NIK tools or at least not as much.

Currently I have my RAW files referenced in Aperture, they were managed but as part of the migration I have restructured. I really never had any major issues with Aperture managed files, and the key wording and rating worked beautifully - also the searching and everything was ver fast. (Im running latex OSX on latest iMac27 with the 2Gig Video card, 32Gig Ram all hooked up to the Promise R4 Thunderbolt)

    On to my concern:

I have seen many posts saying that the Collecting Lib in C17 is not ready for primetime. Im ok with it not being as good as Aperture feature wise, but don't want to enter into a world of pain with a crashing and corrupting library. I currently only have about 50K Raw files. I would like to use many of the benefits of the catalog but need someone that has tried this route to let me know if I should start this way.

The catalog is new in version 7 of CO so it is not as refined as Aperture in performance or functionality.

What I have tried so far:

I have "imported" about 10K of the RAW files already. I loosely say imported as I told C17 to leave the files in the same place that Aperture is referencing them. Just testing things out for now. C17 seems a little sluggish compared to Aperture. Is this just me? I have the OpenCL on but a beefed up machine so that should be ok.

Generally speaking CO is quite "clunky" compared to Aperture when selecting folders, collections etc.

I also notice that C17 seems to only build the "preview" when I go into the folder that contains the picture from the import. Im guessing that after this preview build is done maybe things will be faster ??? wondering??

Yes it only builds the previews in the folder you have selected, I find this annoying. Once previews have rendered things to run a bit smoother.

Questions (Of Which Im sure many will have as we migrate):

Would things be faster if I had everything in the catalog? (I realize that doing this would MOVE them from where Aperture can see them so I would make a copy for testing this out).
    No

Is there a way to force C17 to build ALL the Prieviews one time and then be done with that?
Go to the All Images folder and just walk away and come back later

Aperture was a great DAM. I would use it to manage shots that I may not even have taken myself, or other images that I would use in web sites, or purchased to use etc ... Would C17 be advisable to use this way? or Should I get the Media Pro to pair with C17 ... the money side of things is ok, just looking for the best way to do what I need to do.

I don't have any experience with Media Pro

Also, I can't seem to find a FAST way to switch from Browser (entire area filled with say 20 shots) to Single image to start editing on. In Aperture could press [V] key to toggle from browse, to filmstrip to single image. Also in browse could dbl-click to get straight to full image and edit... It seams that the only way to go from full screen browse to single image is via the menu, and that menu item ant be assigned to a keystroke ... Hum, just seemed basic to me.

You can add a keyboard shortcut, I use the "J" key

    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

    Thanks SizzlingBadger.

I found out about the select ALL IMAGES and then walking away. Im at 17K images and it wants many hours 😊 I can live with this if it gets things a tad snappier.

You mentioning assigning the 'J' key. I know how to assign the keys but which 'menu item' should I assign it to?

Are you a former Aperture Person?

If Yes, Do you think CO (I can't figure out how I kept typing C17 lol) will become your new home?

    Thanks again for the help.

I started out in Aperture, moved to Lightroom and now plan to use CO. You can assign the shortcut key to the the view / toggle viewer option.

Capture One is just not reliable enough to use as a DAM. Using it on a large amount of files is just putting too much work into what can become corrupted and unusable.

Media Pro comes from a defunct Microsoft program. I used it when it was Microsoft... or I should say attempted to use it.
It's catalog repeatedly would become corrupt. Microsoft shelved the program where it sat for a while before Phase One bought it.

Adobe and Apples offerings are far more robust.

It is becoming more apparent that Apple intends to keep professional functionality in Photos as well as make migration and conversion a seamless process. Most importantly of all the new application will be open to 3rd part developers. It is still being developed and will be make compatible with Yosemite that will work fine for quite a few years.
Apple in a very honest move announced that development would not go beyond Yosemite way in advance.
Keep in mind that Phase One does not have that kind of approach. They announced digital backs with USB3 and it was only finally made functional when the next generation of backs was put on the market or announced. Currently the DF+ camera body is described as having 3 focus points but the current firmware only works with one. This was not even mentioned in the release notes...
