Upgrading to v10 question
Hello. I've currently got two Macs and two PC's. I use the two Mac's as well as one PC to edit with Capture One.
So far on my Mac version 10 has been a dream and runs much faster than it used to, which was quite the surprise because I tested first on my lowly 2012 Mac mini. Strangely fantastic performance.
This morning I fired up my PC, eager to see how C1's latest improves on it. here's where it get complicated.
I have a drive tray and five SSD's which I can pop in and out. That makes it easy to boot multiple systems (this box was originally built for my VShere coursework - but I wanted more versatility out of it) So I have removable boot drives for Slackware, Linux-Light, Windows 7, Win 8.1 and Win10.
My first question is regarding licensing. If on the same machine, I license C1 while running Windows 8.1 and then Windows 10 - will that be considered two instal seats?
While I personally don't like windows 10 due to horrible problems I've had twice which were caused by auto updates, I presume that Capture one, especially the latest version would probably run fastest and be most likely to be most stable under MS's latest OS? That is my assumption partly because I imagine that Phase one probably tries to optimize things for Win 10 as a priority and partly because I imagine that there are under the hood improvements in Win 10 over the older versions. Are those assumptions correct? Is it more desirable to use Win 10?
The reason I ask this at this point is that today I fired up my PC and wanted to upgrade to C1 version 10.1 and the boot took about twenty minutes of several downloads, installs and reboots of Windows 10. I hate that but such is life. But this time it was some major update and a whole number of extremely annoying details were changed on my instal. So much so, that if I can't resolve them I am going to possibly just wipe Win 10 out. It's like someone changed all these things, simple things like nagging notifications that had been turned off but are now locked, and even my Start Bar has all these things I had once deleted, put right back - and locked. It's like somebody broke into my house and rearranged my furniture. I'm seeing red!
So my last question is; have any of you had Capture one installs break or act strangely in the past, and if so, how long was it before it was fixed and how bad an impact did it have? Has anyone else downgraded from windows 10 to an older version, and if so did you regret it for any reason or did it work out for the best?
Learning software is a serious time commitment. I want to get up to speed with Capture One to a much higher level than in the past and hope to get a "maximized" harmonious system in place, with which I can work efficiently as well as quickly - and then I'm going to freeze it in place for a good long several years. I'm sick of tired of so many changes, often for changes sake in so many areas of computer life. So, depending on advice here if I stick with windows 10, once I get it set up and humming right - I am disconnecting it from all networks. Back to sneaker net. Fortunately todays USB based sneakers are both cheap and huge in size.
Performance and long term stability -and sanity. So what's the best way forward?

Spend a few hours with google on how to fix Win10 and turn off all those anoying things you don't get on with. Win7 was my fav operating system, but have to say, once tweaked Win10 is excellent for stablity and speed 😊 0 -
Nice logical idea. I normally don't need to do any Googling to fix windows after all those years spent supporting it, but I thought this was one of those cases where an update changed the way things are done, and that it was so simple and obvious, that I just did not notice it. That day I wanted just to test the Speed and workings of C1 version 10 versus my version 9 - so I didn't want to spend time messing with it. Best laid plans 😄
The Problem is that even Microsofts tech support guy, after being given remote access to my machine could not fix it. The update hosed it and both admin accounts behaved the same with random things greyed out and no ability to remove any icons the new upgrade put in. After a while he rolled the OS back - but that still did not fix it. The end result wasn't positive, but I have to say that this was one of those rare times that a call to tech support was. M$'s tech support was fast, knowledgeable and professional. That has not always been my experience in the past, so that part was kind of nice. Sometimes things just blow up. But Auto updates that can only be delayed - that a timelessly poor idea.
A format and clean install got everything working fine, but I'm going to use that more for games and just tinkering and use Win 8.1 for Editing. Unlike many, I actually got along with 8.1 and it has been solid for me.
Still curious about the licensing question though. Same machine, two OS's. I wonder if that eats one seat, or two?0 -

For the Windows 10 nightmare, I'll suggest a monthly/weekly clone ready to pop in the bay when you get a good installation going. At the very least frequent imaging + a fresh install image.
I've been lucky so far. Exactly two years today on W10, upgraded from 7 ultimate, with no major update mess.0 -

I'm pretty sure that each installation will require 1 activation. Thus two installation under different OS's will consume two activations. 0
