broken catalog
Hello
I feel almost desperate.
I was working on a photo included in a catalog that is located in a NAS drive.
Suddenly, I got "I/O error". the catalog has to be closed. it happens sometimes and was hoping to loose only my recent work (not so fun already...).
When I restarted C11 and tried to open I got a new message: "xxxx.cocatalogdb" has failed basic tests, do you want to run a diagnostic and repair the catalog. So full of optimism but already scared. I said "yes".
Then I got the fatal message "data base xxx.cocatalogdb/cocatalogdb" could not be accessed .
the requested document type is not recognized. the provided database is of an unknown type.
I have a MacBook Pro , I tried the operation again via direct lan connection. I can access easily my NAS drive.
Does it mean that I lost all my work on all photos on this catalog ???????
I am a LTR and other softwares user. Never got that kind of huge loss... if it is a loss. C11 seems to me very fragile for professional work if I lost my work.
Any help is more than welcome....

Had the same thing happen to me a few months back. I had to rebuild it from zero. I now always back up through COP and do a manual backup just to make sure this doesn't happen again. I believes it is a glitch as it has happened to me twice.

Hello Rob,
Thanks for message. I felt that I was alone in the world...
Does it mean that you lost all your work on that catalog ??
Ok it is hard lesson, I will make copies of my catalog...
But I hope that developers of C11 will work on the robustness of this.

Did you report the problem to the C1 Support Team using a Support Case?
If not it's difficult to see how the developers could realistically know how to address the problem you experienced.
Other than using the facilities provided to create catalogue backups on a scheduled basis and check and verify when closing a catalog I'm not entirely sure what else they might be able to predict. Especially where a NAS is concerned.
It might also mean that you can obtain advice about how to process with the apparent problem and recover the catalog.
It's a service included with the product - highly recommended to use it.

It happened to me about a month ago, I have 3 catalogues and one got the same message you did. Do you have back up enabled ? This will at least save all your adjustments and then when this happens, you can easily go back to the last back up or a bit further and then you have all your adjustments and nothing lost. I also back up to TM and external hard drive so 3 copies. It freaked me out when it happened.
When I created a new copy from the back up, it was until I re booted the MAC that everything settled down and I could see it in the correct location. Freaked me out at the time mind you !0 -
In general it's not the best idea to store the entire catalog on the NAS.
A local catalog with only the RAWs referenced on the NAS is much (!) faster.0 -
Thanks all for your replies.
I created a case yesterday to phase one and got already an answer.
My catalog is lost and they advertise not to use wifi connections.
But it would be good if they can improve somehow the robustness of catalogs.
As I wrote I am coming from LTR and had never such issues.
So I will invest in another drive and save there a backup of my catalogs.
Is there a way to tell C11 to do it periodically itself ? For example on a weekly basis, daily basis .... ?
Thanks for help.0 -

If by making copies you mean copying the entire catalog, that's overkill.
Simply use the backup feature built into Capture One. That will take care of backing up only the catalog's database without the cached previews etc.
(That being said: Having a good backup strategy for the raw files and the catalog is still important.)0 -

Unless you've disabled the feature, Capture One asks you once a week if you want to do a backup when closing the catalog.0 -

macOS' inbuilt Time Machine feature will take care of this (on a hourly basis).0 -
Capture One preferences lets you set an option regarding how often it asks to back up. You may choose weekly, daily and every time you exit Capture One. I have set my C1 preferences to suggest a backup every time I leave Capture One.
My Capture One catalog (which does not contain any images) is on an SSD attached to the Mac through a USB3 connection. This seems to be both fast and reliable. I have put my images on another SSD, which is slower; I think they could be anywhere, even my 1TB Fusion main drive.
In Capture One preferences you may also specify where the Capture One backup is to be. Mine goes on an external spinning drive, no need for speed here.
And then Time Machine backs up everything to another external spinning drive once an hour.0
