Smart Album issue

    Marco,

As yet I still only have Win 32 bit so cannot try V7.

However in V6 I found the Smart Albums very slow but only when first created. All subsequent use is acceptable fast.

I think what is happening is that a new Smart Album definition is really a filter and this results in an index of files that match the filter(s). This takes some time is starting with a lot of files.

Subsequently, it seems, the index is updated as new files are added and the update effort along with the time it takes is hidden in that processing. The more complex the filter the longer things will take and, I suspect, the more filters you have the longer the load process will take.

One other aspect of indexes is that if there are not many keys - for example just one value for most files - (the sorting calculations can become very slow in some curcumstances depending on how the indexing system works internally. I have no idea if this is a factor in C1 buut thee is always potential for the designers having to trade mass creation speed (as you are doing with an existing set of images) against retrieval speed once the index is built.

As an example - I have a session with 1855 files. A smart album that selects only thos with rating 5 exists as a standard feature in all sessions. I don't have to create it for a new session - it is just there. In the session I have open at the moment on first request after the session is opened it takes 2 or 3 seconds to find and display the 4 files with a rating of 5. If I then select the All FIles Album it starts to display them immediately. If I them re-select the rating 5 albums that too is immediate.

Nothing fancy here - I am running an old Pentium system with Win 32 (so limited memory) and a 1Tb C: drive which has only 50Gb free. OS, Program and Files are all on the same drive in this example.

If you are seeing very different results using V7 to what I describe for V6 I for one would be most interested to hear about them.
