The Auto Open option was given when you first installed the software. If you chose "Yes" you find yourself in the present position. In regard to the Compatible Cameras, these are always outlined in the Release Notes. The PDF available for download alongside the software download.

If I understand the OP correctly, the Auto Open setting is done in the Image Capture program (see in your OS X programs folder). You can set this off in its Preferences.
And the Canon 20D tethering has been supported in CO4 & 5 since the first Pro release (4.5) according to release notes.

Make sure camera's LCD display is off, the camera's auto-off is not active, and if there is a CF card in the camera, that may interfere (not sure though).

    John,
A CF card would interfere with the captures importing from the camera (as the CF card would intercept) but shouldn't interfere with the connection of the camera to the software.

Does that mean you cannot capture to a CF card at the same time you tether with a 5D Mk II or a 1DS MK III? It's a nice way to have an added level of backup while you shoot.

I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately we are a third party developer to DSLR manufacturers and as a result do not get full and free access to internal data. The information we are allowed does leave us a bit restricted in what we can provide, the ability to tether and write to card is such a restriction. It's either one or the other.
