Its may be the very same here, its not a session, its a catalog file also with sessions.

C1 7.0.2 is crashing immediately trying to open a catalog with about 3000 pictures.

    Application Specific Information:
*** error for object 0x2223c1fe0: double free

I started a support case also.
Discribing that this catalog is on an inside HD, pictures are on a outside one.
Thats the benefit for me to work with catalogs.

Up to now, the answer of the stuff:
For a test, please copy the complete catalog to inside HD and try to open with C1.
    😂

I gave it a try 🙄 , and did a copy of this catalog to an external HD to open from a external HD (I dont understand the difference at all), and for that of cours the catalog is crashing the application C1 7 on a MBP 2011 i7, 16GB RAM, OS 10.6.8,

    A few tips.

First, start with a Repair Permissions (Disk Utility program). Capture One really needs this kind of OS X maintenance.

Second, start CO7 without a session or catalog (keep Alt key pressed while starting). Next, do a Verify (File menu) of the session or catalog that causes problems.

Third, if one or two don't work, you can renew the session file by deleting the original and creating a new session with the same name in the same location. No images or adjustments will be affected.

Well, there are no other problems with the apps, even not the (buggy) adobe-progs, neither Xpress or else.

But ok, I did the run of harddisc/permissions and everthing is fine and did not help anything.

So I building up an new catalog with importing about 3500 pictures.
And so good, the adjustments are assigned again, but the structure I have given is gone, so a lot of work is to do again.

Its not a great feeling, why should I not run into the same bug again?

I am admiring the engine of 7, but I need the whole app for working with, pls, for I dropt Adobe-lightrom/ Apple Apperture for the quality-tool of PhaseOne.

I was fine with PhaseOne from 1994 to 2000, and now since C1 6 again, so I hope hard for the quality management of PhaseOne!

I don't know if this will help, and it's not intended to minimize you struggles, but I thought I would toss this into the mix.

I can make a mess of a catalog pretty quickly with the right sequence of file moves and then removing a folder. My choice at the moment is to continue to use sessions for my client work, because they are pretty much bullet proof, and to play with the catalog function. I can put up with sessions a bit longer because after seeing the conversions in CO7 it's very hard to go back to Lightroom conversions.

    Thanks Paul,

Will creating this new session file still allow me to see the favorites I've added and smart albums I've created? That's what ends up being the most frustrating. Having to redo it every time.

I'll do a permission repair and see if it works after this job ends. For now I'm working crash-free on 6.4.4 and living stress free (except I can't use the software I just paid for the way it was intended).

You indeed will lose session albums and session favorites when you refresh the session file.

Thanks Paul. Sadly that resolution doesn't do much in the way of saving me time (or hair).
