Question on backup
I import all my images into my Catalog, and do not use referenced images. So from the description (and resulting catalog file sizes), it would appear all my images are indeed stored in my catalog.
When I started a new cloud based backup program, the Catalogs themselves were too large to upload, but the images in the Catalog package all uploaded individually, by their original file name (i.e. DSCF1450.RW2). Judging by the file sizes in the cloud, they were the full RAW and JPEG files. So now my cloud backup does not have any catalogs, but the images that are supposed to be inside the catalog appear to be in my cloud storage.
So if I have a computer disaster, and download all the image files the backup software uploaded to my cloud storage, will I still have my images? And if so, would they be with or without any adjustments?
Thanks for clearing this up for me.
John

Hi John,
Based on the information provided, you will have your images after restore, but not the adjustments.
I was wandering what the issue is that your backup program does not backup the catalog. A catalog is just a folder with sub folders and files, also known as a package. You can see this when you right-click on a catalog and choose Show Package Contents.
If all the files and folders are backed up, in the end your entire catalog is backed up.
I suggest you create a dummy catalog with some images, back it up, delete it, and restore the entire folder.0 -

Paul, in the Windows version a SQLite database is a the heart of catalogs. Isn't this the case with COP7 for Mac also?
With the Windows version at least, if you haven't backed up the SQLite database - it is a file with the extension cocatalogdb - you cannot be said to have backed up your catalog. I'm trying to understand what the OP means when saying that the catalogs themselves weren't backed up.
Edit: I just made a rather curious observation when using the CO Catalog Backup facility, which I have posted here:

Hi Mogens, yes, with Mac it is the same. I replied to your other post as well.0 -
Thanks for the reply Paul, that is what I pretty well expected.
To answer your question, I do a full backup to an external hard disk about once a month. That includes the catalogs.
But daily I do a cloud backup of all changed files, and that catches any file I add/change during the day. But it is limited to a 1G file size so the catalog itself is not backed up nightly.
BTW, I'm OK with this. It means that worst case everything is restorable (from hard disk) plus up to one month of images that do not have the saved edits. But I'm an amateur not a pro so only my personal images are affected.
One second/third thought, my cloud backup also includes files ending in .cop so maybe the individual edits are saved...

The .cop files are previews; static files that do not contain adjustments. With a catalog, the adjustments are stored inside the catalog database.0
