It depends on how you install things but yes, both can coexist although I don't think the C1 team would want to encourage that since there are some shared settings and so on.
On the other hand it does provide a means to run trial software.
Be aware that if you upgrade images to the new version they will not be accessible from the old version.
That's not usually a problem so long as you know about it. You can manage around it to suit your needs.

CO9 and CO10 are installed in different folders and maintain their respective preference settings. So you can have them installed both.
As Grant pointed out, CO10 will upgrade your session/catalog file and the Settings files when using sessions to the new version. Adjustments are retained but you can not open a session/catalog in CO9 once you have opened it in 10.0 -

its a shame no warning message is provided about that , but I assume that if you open v9 and reimport the original images you can start again in version 9, you will have lost your edits ,I guess, however.0 -

You will not be able to open a V10 session/catalogue using V9.
However C1 will make a copy of your current V9 (or whatever version) session file or catalogue before creating the V10 version. The original edits will not be lost unless you take specific actions to delete the saved file and, in the case of sessions, the related "settings" folders.
And there is a warning or two anyway although to be realistic if anyone thinks there is no possible effect to consider when they are presented with an "Upgrade" option and so fail to read the release notes or check form on-line sources what might happen .... well, one wonders if they are being as careful as they could be and possibly whether they might be working with the wrong technology.
