C9 catalog update

Working with image reference catalog.
What is the correct way to update a catalog when images are added, removed and edited via the OSX finder?
Does the file importer automatically pickup changes to the folder structure and updates the catalog next time the importer runs?
I have not been able to keep the catalog current using the synchronize menu option.

  You should perform this kind of operation from within CO.
