Select All Images

Any ideas when I do a select all (thumbnails), the number of selected images selected decreases?

I've currently got a folder of 880 images, just done a select all and it's counting down, stopping at 191 of 880 images selected?

6.4.4/mountain lion/1dx
It's done it for the previous versions as well

Now it's at 191 I've just done select all again and this time it's fine, 880/880.
