How to use catalogs efficiently?
I have a catalog for each year saved where all the original files are on an external HD. Shortly prior to this I had every catalog stored on my iMac HD until I realized that 4-5 catalogs are almost a terabyte of space, hence transferring them to their respective harddrives sorted by year.
Now, anytime I want to see a certain catalog, I have to open it up everytime...
Is there a way to have all catalogs loaded and I can see offline files, but when I plug the corresponding external HD, they become online? RIght now, when I exit C1, the catalogs go with it and I have to reopen them every time.
I have 20k+ images archived that I sift through often. What is the best way to go about managing these in C1 without it being so overwhelming?

It’s not clear to me from your post whether the images are on the external drive with the catalog files themselves o the internal drive, or whether the catalog files are also on the external drive.

Hi,
20k+ images are not so many. You could try to merge all your catalogs into one.
But you must have it in your computer (not on an external HDD) if you want to open it, together with the app. Otherwise, it won't work. Your images can be stored on an external HDD, then. In that case, they would be "offline" when opening C1 and the catalog(s), but you could perform on them most of the usual adjustments.

I had this "offline" as well but as soon as you let C! create "all images" preview, the images should show up offline as well.
As Ian asked already, your images are on seperate HDs than the catalog, right?

What increases the size of the catalog is indeed the previews. And Capture One is able to work "off line" (RAW storage disconnected) only because it has created the previews. Otherwise it couldn't.
And to create the previews, Capture One needs the RAWs. Only once.
