    Both of them will add contrast and while Clarity is considered to be an adjustment to the midtones, it doesn't follow that Sharpness will only act on the shadows and highlights.
    If there is little frequency change in the shadows or highlights, or midtowns for that matter, sharpening will yield little difference. Sharpness acts on all tonal ranges and is adjustable by use of radius and threshold settings more so than Clarity is.

    Its not a one or the other choice. Clarity is like MAGIC, most of the time, but its not as refined as Sharpness.
