Catalog backup eating up diskspace

I noticed that my diskspace was running low so I had a look around and found that the Catalog Backup in the ~/Library/Application Support/Capture One/... was huge. There was a lot of RAW-files stored there.

I store all my images within the catalog, no referenced files, but those shouldn't be in the backup according to the splash-screen that reminds me to backup the catalog.

"The backup only covers the catalog structure, metadata and adjustment. No original images are backed up."

Does anybody know if it is safe to just delete a specific backup-folder?
Will the program get confused if I do this manually?

  If set up correctly your "Catalog Backup" should be set up as a separate folder of same name. (Normally setup via C1 Preferences) There will only be a list of folders inside that with dates and times of each and every back made. It is, in my opinion, perfectly normal to delete all but the last weeks folders.
  There certainly shouldn't be any RAW files in it.
