Can I use sessions with my workflow?
Everything I've read says I should use Sessons and not catalog when processing my RAW files. However I haven't figured out a way to integrate into my workflow and storage format. I've always used a catalog in the past but am open to using sessions.
My file structure is a Year->Month structure. All image files and sidecars end up in the folder appropriate for the date taken. I don't shoot professionally but rather as an enthusiast so each month folder could have vacations, holidays, nature shoots, etc.
I use PhotoSupreme v3 for importing, culling, and cataloging if not using CO sessions. I import to a single folder ("Pending") and then have pointed CO (as well as the other RAW converter software I use) to that folder for processing. After processing I move the exported jpg, raw, and sidecar to the appropriate monthly folder. Not all RAW files are converted using CO or even converted at all.
The main issue I've had with sessions is that when the project is done I move the files to the monthly folder and since I rarely return to a RAW to process again the session folders seem to loose their benefit. For that reason I've continued to use a catalog.
In light of the above am I right that sessions is not appropriate for my use? If sessions is still the best way, any suggestions? I've read the are a number of benefits using sessions over catalogs.

One possible approach is to use sessions in the first instance and then import the session into your catalog when you are no longer likely to want to go back to it.

Sessions have the advantage of being "closed" so you don't have to open a big catalog and you can "isolate" your shoots for your clients.
I also work with a Year/Month structure (e.g. 20017/20017-12-27-CLIENTJOB). But for your purpose that's not very useful unless your projects are very extensive and include hundreds or thousands of photos.
Ian3 is right, combining both sessions and catalogs seems to be the best solution.0 -
I use BreezeBrowser Downloader Pro to import all my photos (if not shooting tethered) to my RAW Drive/[2017 Month # Job Name MonthName]/[RAW]/[Jobname Month Date Hour Minute Second-image number Camera]
ie.
[2017 11 Young Fam Nov]
..[RAW]
Young Fam Nov 12 112445-6737 7D Mark II.CR2
Young Fam Nov 12 112445-6738 7D Mark II.CR2... etc
Then using BreezeBrowser Pro I select keepers and drag them up to the first level where I point Capture One to the directory in Library tab using System Folders.
[2017 11 Young Fam Nov](keepers)
Young Fam Nov 12 112445-6737 7D Mark II.CR2
Young Fam Nov 12 112445-6738 7D Mark II.CR2... etc
..[CaptureOne]
....[Cache]
....[Settings100]
..[RAW](rejects)
Young Fam Nov 12 113212-6799 7D Mark II.CR2
Young Fam Nov 12 113237-6816 7D Mark II.CR2... etc0 -
Thanks all. I think I'll use sessions and then import into catalog that way I can delete the session folders and keep my current file structures. 0
