I am getting V20 upgrade notices. What are the new features?

We really aren't, Grant - there's nothing to misunderstand: we're being asked - in effect - to put our faith in Phase One and buy an as-yet unreleased version of a piece of software, sight unseen.
Spin it any way you want, but that's what's happening. Would you buy your next car on the same basis?
But I'm clearly failing to make the point well enough, so I'll just leave it.
No Keith, you have made the point eloquently enough but the key to it, as I see it, is that the only difference between this year and previous years is the explicit pre-announcement coupled with the related 20% discount offer.
Take that away and everything is the same as last year (conceptually, ignore the numbers) so one sees an upgrade price that one can choose to buy at or not on the day of release once one has seen and potentially tested the offering.
In essence it's the same proposition as it has been for previous years.
The main difference is the advanced offer which seems to me to be a way of pre-handling any discontent from people who had either upgraded from an earlier version just before the 30 day cut off or paid for the application as a new user just before the 30 day cut off that would have seen them either wait a while longer before buying or be entitled to a free next version offer.
(I'll ignore those who complained that they did not see an option to upgrade at a discount from a much older version or felt that buying only 6 months before the new version release ought to provide for a free update, etc.)
It's an offer to buy (sight unseen unless part of the beta test group) with a small but useful discount if one is prepared to do so - and it is clear that many are and always have been previously - if one so wishes.
The offer also confirms, for new buyers of the perpetual licence option, that they can buy now and start to gain the benefits and then update after the release of V20 when they feel the time is right.
It's not compulsory. There is no penalty, compared to previous years, for following the same approach as previously should one so choose and testing the new product before buying. For V11 and earlier users, as far as I am aware, the old approach is the only available option and there is nothing wrong with that as a concept from the POV of continuity of policy.
There is really no rational reason, in my opinion, for this offer to be anything that can be logically criticised as it has been.

Well put Grant.
I am amused by how often I observe people work themselves into a state of righteous indignation over very little.0 -

Thanks for your kind words and the observation.
It seems to be a trend of our modern times, applied to many or even all subjects, to get worked up about all sorts of matters across the entire canvas of life.
I'm sure the trend signifies something but precisely what that something might be may not yet be totally clear.

It is like having a TV ad or magazine ad that just says give us money and that is all the ad says. You think that is an effective ad? I have seen my share of poor advertising but usually they put forth some effort. As someone new to the product it gives me a weird introduction to the company.0 -
Hi Mike.
I'm guessing, based on previous years, that we are now quite close to public discovery of what is being unleashed.
My impression is that, whilst some people may not find what they specifically seek, there is likely to be considerable benefit available for everyone, including the potentially disappointed.
Indeed there may be even more than might seem likely from an outline description of included newness, were it available.
It would be truly amazing if there were not some rough edges in the first few weeks - we seem to be at a point where all software developers, from the mightiest down, are struggling to address some apparent basic aspects of the modern development world and user expectations. It would be surprising for anyone to buck that trend, especially if to do so required the ability to beat the big players are their own game.
All of that said, if one's leaning is to upgrade anyway, through habit or on the basis of trust, I can't see why one would not do so this time.
But if one prefers not to dive in but to wait and see what is on offer then that would fine too.
If what is new is useful (see above) then it becomes an easy decision as to when to upgrade. But if nothing seems to offer personal benefit ... then don't upgrade in advance.
Run the trial and then make a decision. It's not a matter of life and death.
FWIW I can disclose that I liked V12 a lot but was not an early adopter. Much of what it offered, feature wise, was of no use to me as a Windows user. I updated several months after its release, seduced by a worthwhile offer and some new shoots I had undertaken that could benefit from the functionality progress over V11.
This round, as others have already hinted, is perhaps more immediately compelling from the personal perspective of a 'regular' user.
I should perhaps mention that I am a Sessions user with certain assessments somewhat aligned to a sessions user point of view.

It's not a huge deal it's just weird. 0 -

I find Black Friday weird as a concept.
One of the challenges of having a global market model I assume.
Advertising is a whole different game. Once you are on that hamster wheel you just have to keep running.
Presumably the modern world has new options depending on which generation(s) one is trying to market to.
It's difficult to know what one can do with a product on a release schedule that has to fit, somehow, with other companies release schedules (to make sense) but ended up coinciding with with a traditional (Western, northern hemisphere) time of purchasing frenzy based on ancient winter solstice celebrations.0 -
We could have thought that it would have been after the Black Friday. But, now, there is a Cyber Monday.... 😄 0 -

Version 20 turned out to be pretty lackluster update. Half of it's features could have been tucked into a point release, bummer.0 -
Being asked to upgrade at a reduced price without knowing what you are paying for stinks. Its disappointing C1 is moving in this direction.

@John Brummer
What makes you think you are being asked to upgrade?
There is an offer but you can easily ignore it until you have taken a look at whether it is of interest to you if that is of concern.

It is of interest to me - I've used C1 for many years. It's a insult assuming that I will throw money at some upgrade I may have no use for.

I think it is safe to say it will have more Lightroom features. If you are interested in closing the gap between the two products even more that is most likely part of what it does.
