Performance Optimization

Hello all,

90% of my time I'm shooting tethered. Until recently I was using Lightroom, but lately I've switched to COP6 due to its superior image quality in my opinion. I'm using either 5dmkii or Phase One backs mainly P45+ and P65+.
When I'm shooting tethered it's mostly on a Macbook Pro i7 with 16gb RAM and 2 SSDs. Most of the time both Photoshop CS5 and COP6 are open.
What do you think are the best settings memory wise to get the best performance and balance from both programs? How much memory should I allocate to Photoshop? Is there a way to manage COP6 memory allocation?

  Hi Goran,
  
  CO6 does not have memory management as you have in Photoshop. Basically, CO6 accesses all available memory as far as it needs it. Memory usage depends on how you use your programs, hence it is difficult to guide. Some tips however:
  
  Your best friend is the Activity Monitor program in the Programs/Utilities folder. Keep it running while on the job, make the program Dock icon display Memory Usage. Limit the list of processes to My Processes and watch Photoshop and Capture One once in a while (Real Memory column).
  
  Give Photoshop 50% memory to start with. Get a feeling of what happens. After a few shootings, change the value upwards or downwards in the range of 25 - 75% for Photoshop. Is the overall performance getting better or worse? Adjust accordingly and you have your best settings.

  Are you experiencing any problems? Your post doesn't state that. While i love an optimized system myself, when you're not having any problems you may wonder whether it is worth it looking at this.
  
  Other than that, why would you keep photoshop open while you're shooting into C1?

  No, no problems what so ever, just was wondering maybe someone has any recommendation as to memory management.
  I'm in fashion business and I keep Photoshop open for quick on-set retouches because the clients sometimes require it and occasionally some rough color post-process to give the client an idea of end product. I find local adjustments in COP to be too limited. Sometimes I also need to show the image after some Liquify adjustments in Photoshop.
  Back to subject, how much will COP gain from having more RAM? Supposed it has 8gb available to it will it perform better if it has more?

  In that case, i would go with Paul_E's recommendation to use the Activity Monitor to look at how C1 is doing on your system.
  
  And, like stated above, the more ram available, the better. Not necessarily because C1 will use all of it, but for applications like yours (having to have PS open).
