Tethering Connection Problem with 35mm Cameras in C1
Hi Everyone,
I'm a digi tech and have been having small, yet consistent issues with dropped connections while tethering Nikon D3X & Canon 5D Mark II to CaptureOne. I think it has to do more with the tethering hardware than the program/computer...however I'm open to hearing any suggestions to make this a smoother workflow.
We have an i7 10.6.8 iMac that always has at least 2.5 TB available and only use it on location, and only run CaptureOne at that time.
For tethering connection, I currently use USB 2.0 Trendnet Extension Cable, Iogear USB 2.0 Booster Extension Cable A Male to A Female, and Pearstone USB 2.0 Type A Male to Type B Mini Male Cable (10').
I am interested in learning about the absolute BEST and FASTEST tethering connection I can purchase for the 35mm systems, price is not an issue. I haven't been able to find anything faster than what we have except for the TetherPro USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Active Extension Cable, which I have not tested yet.
While testing, everything works fine (however the images to transfer relatively slowly, but the photographer is a very speedy shooter and I cannot change that), and then in the middle of a shot, the connection is disrupted or appears frozen. This has happened multiple ways:
-The program does not freeze, as I am able to navigate around, and the cord has not fallen out, the status bar appears to be still transferring images, however they never load. (status bar is orange)
-In the middle of transferring images (orange status bar), immediately turns to pinwheel and freezes. cord has not fallen out
-Occasionally, the Canon seems to have issues: the program sees the connection, is not frozen, cord is connected, and camera is shooting images but they never load. When I look at the camera, the number of images left is still flashing (not counting down) as if it is still trying to connect to computer. I remedy this by turning it off, removing batteries, and turning back on and that usually works, but I can't lose precious time by doing this. How can I remedy the camera problem?
Any hardware recommendations or workflow suggestions would be appreciated so I can run the best and fastest digi station, as well how I can fix this odd Canon connection problem. I am happy to provide more details if necessary.

A suggestion I can give you is that you open Activity Monitor and keep an eye on used RAM in general and allocated memory by Capture One processes in particular. During the shoot, both the general memory use and the Real Memory can push the computer over its limits. Intermittent restarting might help (although difficult to sell in the middle of a shoot). Real Mem for the Capture One process should stay well below 2 GB, perhaps even lower.
Use this initially for troubleshooting and as a workaround if you can determine the threshold for healthy/non-healthy workflow.0
