Naming variants

Is it posible to name variants beyond the auto-numbering? In another thread it came up that in lieu of a non-existant edit history list, variants can be used to freeze adjustments at certain points. It would be helpful in that case to be able to name variants with identifying descriptors.

Keywords/Phrases or EXIF fields are currently the most obvious options available.

Yeah the workarounds are WAY around, when simply naming variants would be the more direct solution. Has anyone made the suggestion to the developers and gotten a reply?
