EIP and Expression

Hello,

I have been delaying adding my images to a new catalog as there seems to be no support for previews and EIP's on a Mac. Is this the case?

Im curious because it seems only IIQ files are read in the fullest sense by Expression. My main reason to catalog is to see medium size previews offline.

I actually shoot to TIF, but they also seem to have the same preview problems. If this is the case, is there any development regarding the 'Phase One being able to read Phase One Files'?

    I was hoping for the same. I received replies saying (a) that EM2 does not support EIP thumbnails (although, by modifying the custom.txt file you can index the files and then tag them, etc) and (b) there are work arounds which could give you thumbnail access.

    Both approaches are outlined in this thread:

    But, to Expression Media Support/Product Manager: Unpacking the EIP files -- or renaming and unzipping them -- is an awkward step in our workflow and we REALLY would like it if we could index the files directly. Right now, we are missing many images in our index because of that and it is a burden when we are revising our photographer's portfolio, reviewing images for stock, etc. Is there an ETA for including this feature? It's hard working with an image indexing product which doesn't index images coming in from the camera.

    Hi Gary,

    Yes, it seems a bit frustrating as my workflow has been to shoot to TIF (mainly because I had problems PS reading IIQ files) then packaging the files to eip to transfer them to my final machine.
    I suppose for now I can make do with unpacking them in C1 before importing to Expression. My problem is with Expression reading the previews for TIF files. I can not seem to get Expression to load a larger preview for TIF files. Then I came across a document saying that Expression does not read larger previews for TIF files on a Mac! I have sifted through the forum to see if anyone else has this problem, but can't find anything useful.
    It does seem strange that Phase and Expression have worked together for some time (even before P1 purchasing the program) and have not addressed this yet. Especially considering a very popular combination has been TIF and Mac and Phase One.
    Anyway, Im not really here to rant, my next question addressed to Phase One is: Can I now convert all my TIF files to IIQ? Should I do this? I was hoping just to wait it out for Expression to accept eip's. But maybe this is too long a wait?

    Any ideas are much appreciated!

    That's an interesting problem. How large of a preview are you trying to generate?

    On IIQ/TIF, Photoshop CS5 seems to be opening IIQ files just fine for me. And, I could easily be wrong about this, but I thought Phase One's TIF and IIQ formats were the same. I believed Phase One used TIF because it had a tif preview embedded in the file and it wanted other parties' tools to see the preview. When we first started using the iiq extension, I would rename the file to .tif and Photoshop would open it as RAW.

    On EIP, I am going to do one of two things (or both):
    - Add the extension to Expression. Then I will at least have a placeholder for the image (right now Expression isn't even listing the images without thumbnails). I can then go back in and rebuild it when EIP support is there.
    - Create small jpgs of all of the images from a job and index those so I can get a general sense of the shot.

    The TIF and IIQ files are the same, I've renamed them back and forth with no problem. Right now I'm having the camera generate the images with the .tif extension so I can do geotagging with a program that's happy to tag TIFs but doesn't "know" about IIQ. Then I rename them to .iiq because there are still some programs that will blow away all the raw data if they see a TIF and don't see RGB data.

    Technically, the IIQ _is_ a TIF, since TIF is simply a container format. There's nothing that says the image(s) contained needs to be RGB (remember, Canon used to do this also, their raw files had a .tif extension because they were packaging the raw in a TIF container).
