    I must say that I find the current tool quite useful. Of course it only really helps when there is a line you can set as vertical or horizontal. If there isn't, I am more likely to change to one of the other rotate tools, such as the freehand rotate, or to enter a number of degrees in the crop tool tab. Also, I often zoom in before using the straighten tool, if the straight line is only a small part of the image. And habitually I draw down from top to bottom or across from left to right but there is no reason not to go the other way (bottom to top, or right to left). And I get the most accurate control by drawing past the end point I am aiming at so you can then get finer control over slight shifts in the angle.

    And finally ... I sometimes straighten an image, and then change the angle slightly anyway because what is technically straight doesn't always look right.
